Market movers report for racing at Doomben and Flemington
THE final group one of the season was run and won on Saturday with Tycoon Tara taking out the Tatts Tiara.
There was good late money for the Peter and Paul Snowden-trained runner and punters were able to find great early value across the eight-race card in the Sunshine State.
Quality racing was also on show at Flemington where bookmakers got taken to the cleaners.
Numerous well-backed winners rolled home for punters and it’s a continuing trend we’re seeing in 2017.
Market movers report – Doomben
Race 1: Cruising Speed ($4.20), from Notonyourlife and Bushy
Jeff Lloyd got off to a winning start in the saddle and punters also got off on the right note. Cruising Speed was heavily backed into $4.20 after opening at $7.50 and that set the tone for the day. Bushy was the big drifter in the market at long odds, drifting from $71 to an incredible $126.
Race 2: Curdled ($6), from Marseille En Fleur and Guissola
Curdled was a little easy in the market after opening at $5.50, but there wasn’t any significant betting moves in the race.
Race 3: Dream Kisses ($4.80), from Cool Mover and She’s Our Star
The market was heavily affected by the scratching of favourite Cellargirl, which was a $1.70 chance. Nice money came late for all three placegetters, but punters were cautious following the favourite’s exclusion.
Race 4: With A Promise ($4.60), from I’m A Rippa and Ringo’s A Rockstar
Punters were confident that the Ben Currie-trained filly could produce and they were right. It was backed in late in the betting picture and punters scored yet another win early on the Doomben card. Eat My Trust ($8 into $4.20) was the only well-backed runner to finish outside of the placings.
Race 5: Rudy ($2.70), from More Energy and War Baby
The small field made it tough for punters to secure value, but both Rudy and Pemberley were well-backed and it was the loyal followers of Rudy which came out on top. More Energy had specking at double figure odds to add some value to multiples.
Race 6: Religify ($2.90), from Payroll and Man Of His Word
Religify has been a money making machine on dry tracks for punters and they secure a great price again. The Chris Waller-trained sprinter opened at $4 and that price was never going to last. It got backed late and punters were thanking the reliable type once again.
Race 7: Tycoon Tara ($17), from Prompt Response and In Her Time
We labelled Tycoon Tara as the value bet in the Tatts Tiara and punters climbed on board. The Snowden-trained mare was backed in from $21 to $17 as punters could see the value on offer. In Her Time was the most popular betting elect at $2.80 and it ran well to finish third.
Race 8: Burning Passion ($8.50), from Irish Constabulary and Too Good To Refuse
Burning Passion held its original price throughout the market and the big money came for Deploy, which was disappointing in the run. It was a bad day for bookmakers, but they finished on a high.
Horse to follow from Doomben: Cool Mover
It’s only a moderate type, but it has been contesting tough fields and it made good late ground. Watch for it in something easier at midweek level.
Market mover report – Flemington
Race 1: Royal Symphony ($2), from Whoomph and Sully
Royal Symphony was one of the boom horses with punters and it paid off. The talented type ($2.90 into $2) scored an impressive win and it never looked in doubt. Two long shot placings improved trifecta pay outs.
Race 2: Overstep ($6), from Invincible Al and Blue Tycoon
Overstep had been a consistent runner all season and punters specked it late. It opened at $9 and was bet early in the week to a price where it stayed steady throughout. The best-backed was runner-up Invincible Al which was taking ground off the winner late.
Race 3: Schism ($4.60), from Tsaritsa and Mamzelle Tess
Schism is always well-backed and Saturday was no different. It’s an underrated type by many, but not punters who backed it in from $8.50 to $4.60. That was one of the biggest moves of the day and punters were happy with the result. Runner-up Tsaritsa was a notable drifter from $6 to $10.
Race 4: Encosta Line ($7.50), from Sayed and Xebec
Encosta Line was a big firmer from $13 when markets first opened. Sir Van Dyke and Duke Of Ellington were also big market pushes, but they couldn’t muster much in the straight. Xebec added some value for third after drifting from $20 to $61.
Race 5: Charlevoix ($5.50), from Hursley and Bullish Stock
Charlevoix turned around some disappointing form to score a nice win. Punters backed off it late after it hit $3.80 at one stage, but it was still a good result for punters. The always-consistent Hursley and Bullish Stock rounded out the placings at each way odds.
Race 6: Ability ($3.80), from Husson Eagle and Rough Justice
After opening at $5, Ability was well-backed into favouritism. There wasn’t much positive movement in the betting as both placegetters were notable drifters from their original single-figure quotes.
Race 7: Riyadh ($9.50), from Zagaya and Rewarding Effort
Punters were burnt badly in this race as the money came for $2.40 favourite Rewarding Effort. Some clever punters were able to secure double-figure odds for the winner, but bookmakers made their keep in this race.
Race 8: Cannyescent ($2.60), from Mio Dio and Tshahitsi
Punters went bang early with Cannyescent, which opened at $4.40 and was quickly backed into a shorter quote. It reached its shortest quote come start time and it gave bookmakers a headache in the process. Mio Dio added some value to multiples at $15.
Race 9: Thaad ($21), from What A Shock and Atlantic Express
Much like Doomben, bookies made some money back on the last race as all three runners were despised in the market.
Horse to follow from Flemington: Royal Symphony
You won’t get big odds with this runner, but it should continue to add to its impressive form line.
