With A Promise to spell following gutsy Doomben win

With A Promise scored a gutsy win at Doomben on Saturday and will now spell before targetting the $1 million Magic Millions Fillies & Mares

EXPECTATIONS were set high for With A Promise before Saturday’s win at Doomben and the talented filly didn’t disappoint.

The three-year-old by I Am Invincible ran one of the quickest times of the day for the 1350m distance when beating I’m A Rippa by a half-length and that came on the seven-day back up after winning at Ipswich.

When we spoke to trainer Ben Currie last week he said With A Promise was best suited with two/three weeks in between runs, but the schedule forced Currie to run his stable star in consecutive weeks.

“We looked at the program and there wasn’t a lot for her going forward where she would be in OK at the weights,” Currie told HorseBetting.com.au. “That race yesterday (Saturday) was set weights, that was the main reason.

“I also wanted to get her up to 1350m, I’ve been wanting to go to that distance with her for awhile, but basically she had no other choice so we made the decision to back her up.”

The win in the Singapore Airlines Plate was impressive considering it doesn’t race well on the back up, but Currie couldn’t turn down the chance to race at ideal conditions before sending it for a deserved spell.

“We thought at set weights, the right distance and against her own age, it made sense to run,” Currie said. “She might not have been at her best on the back up, but the fact that she was going to the paddock after the run we thought we may as well have a go.”

Jockey James Orman was positive out of the gates with the filly, which had shown tenancies to get back in the run and flash home late.

“She’s come off a back up after seven days, I thought she was a little flat today, even though she won she felt flat,” Orman said post-race. “So it was a good win on her behalf.

“I think she’ll be better with two weeks between runs. I spoke to Ben this morning, he was confident she’d run the trip, hes a good judge.”

Currie was pleased with the ride despite engaging in a two-horse war for most of the race.

“She ran super. Took luck out of the equation, got right up there on the speed,” Currie said. “She got into a dog fight with the other horse, but she was too tough.

“She’s a good filly with a good record now and the most impressive thing about the run was the time. She went a second faster than the two-year-old race earlier in the day and only .3/.4 slower than the group one of the day (Tatts Tiara).”

Currie is sticking with his plan to spell With A Promise and will look to bring the $26,000 purchase back for a tilt at the $1 million Magic Millions Fillies & Mares on January 18.

“She’ll come back for the Magic Millions and we’ll work out a preparation for that. She’ll go there second or third up and work out a plan around that,” Currie added.
