Feature Race Race 8: Group 2 A.D. Hollindale Stakes (1800m)
First Race 11:23am AEST

The Gold Coast Turf Club will play host to nine high-quality races on Saturday, with a number of stars set to do battle in feature races. The likes of Ayrton, Prince Of Boom, Shooting For Gold, Orbisyn, Gypsy Goddess and Nettuno are just a couple of big names that are listed in the race book for Saturday’s meeting, while the most exciting of them all, Zaaki, is set to return to Queensland in the featured A.D. Hollindale Stakes (1800m).

At the time of writing, the track is rated a Soft 6, although thunderstorms are forecast across Thursday, Friday and Saturday, so we could see a downgrade of the track by the time the first race comes around at 11:23am AEST. The rail will be in the true position for the entire course.

Read on for HorseBetting’s race-by-race preview, best bets and quaddie tips for Hollindale Stakes Day at the Gold Coast.

Race 1: Benchmark 78 Handicap (1400m)

We highlighted the run of MONTEZ in The Follow Files following his last-start fourth at Doomben, so we are keen to be with the local galloper on Saturday. The Maryann Brosnan-trained five-year-old looks to have found a very suitable race over 1400m on the back of two eye-catching runs over 1220m and 1350m earlier in his preparation. The son of More Than Ready has had four starts at the Gold Coast for a win and two minor placings, so now that he is third-up, out to 1400m and on his home deck, we are confident that Montez and Robbie Fradd will be flying home late into the winner’s circle.

Race 2: Bat Out Of Hell (900m)

Blink and you will miss them! The Bat Out Of Hell has some of the fastest 900m horses across the country in this year’s field, including 900m specialist REMLAPS GEM. The Scott Singleton-trained sprinter is six from six over the short course, two of which have been at the Gold Coast, so we expect that he will build on that record on Saturday. The son of Rubick will be ridden by James McDonald from barrier eight, which will see the gelding go straight to the front and give nothing else a chance. He just flies over 900m!

Selections:

Race 3: Gold Coast Cup (2400m)

Stayers get their chance in race three, with the running of the Gold Coast Cup over 2400m. New Zealand is well represented in this race with three gallopers lining up from across the ditch, including SOPRANO SUPREME. The four-year-old mare is coming off back-to-back wins at Rotorua over 1950m and 2200m, and they were both dominant displays. Trained by Mark Walker, the daughter of Contributer comes to Australia in a rich vein of form, and in this rather weak edition of the Gold Coast Cup, she can keep that winning form going under Kerrin McEvoy.

Selections:

Race 4: Group 3 Ken Russell Memorial Classic (1200m)

A field of 15 two-year-olds will contest the first Group race of the afternoon in the Ken Russell Memorial Classic over 1200m. We might see a pretty smart horse step out in the form of the unbeaten NETTUNO, who looks very promising. The Tony Gollan-trained colt has won with plenty of authority in his two wins to date, leading all of the way at both the Sunshine Coast and at Doomben, winning by 4.5 lengths on each occasion. While this is tougher, it still isn’t the strongest of races, so we expect the son of I Am Invincible to have their measure once again.

Selections:

Race 5: Listed Silk Stocking (1400m)

The fillies and mares will do battle over 1400m in the Listed Silk Stocking, where Tony Gollan and Ryan Maloney combine again. The form that BONHAM brings over from New Zealand is certainly good enough to win this, and although we haven’t seen that in her two Australian starts, we are hoping the Queensland sun can get the best out of her. After arriving in Australia in the spring, Gollan took the four-year-old straight to Melbourne, where she failed to beat a runner home at Caulfield or Flemington. She has won four from eight and comes into this off no public trials, so it will be interesting to see where she is at, but we just don’t want to be off her in an average race.

Selections:

Race 6: Listed Gold Coast Bracelet (1800m)

A key lead up to the Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2200m) is the Gold Coast Bracelet, a race that Tinto (2014) and Winning Ways (2019) won en route to taking out the three-year-old fillies’ classic a month later. Chris Waller has won three Bracelets, including last year’s edition with Grace And Harmony, and we think he can do it again in 2022. SMIRK caught our eye when winning at Canterbury on April 20 over 1550m on a Heavy 8 track. Although the margin was minuscule and it was only a midweek Benchmark 64, we really liked the way she levelled out and was in for the fight as Vittoriosa came back underneath her. Hugh Bowman hops in the saddle on Saturday, which is a good strong booking, while barrier five allows the pair to settle close to what will likely be only a moderate tempo. She can win at nice odds.

Selections:

Race 7: Group 3 Gold Coast Guineas (1200m)

A strong field has been assembled for the Group 3 Gold Coast Guineas, with a capacity field of three-year-olds set to battle it out the $150,000 event. With plenty of differing form lines coming from right across the country and New Zealand, PRINCE OF BOOM is clearly the one to beat, coming off back-to-back wins at Toowoomba and here at the Gold Coast when dominant in the QTIS Jewel 3YO six weeks ago. The Rob Heathcote-trained galloper will go forward from his wide gate and take plenty of running down under James Orman. The only query is that he missed a run in the Mick Dittman Plate two weeks ago, so he could be lacking a fitness edge.

Selections:

Race 8: Group 2 A.D. Hollindale Stakes (1800m)

This could be wrapped up in one word: certainty. That is exactly what ZAAKI is in his quest to go back-to-back in the Hollindale Stakes. The Annabel Neasham galloper is a superstar, coming off a win in the All-Star Mile and a narrow defeat in the $4 million Queen Elizabeth Stakes. Zaaki’s victory in this race last year was the highest-rating win across the entire Queensland Winter Carnival, so a repeat of that will see him donkey-lick this field. Sure, Ayrton has ability, but he has a way to go yet if he is to get close to Zaaki. James McDonald hops back aboard, they have drawn ideally in barrier four and get perfect conditions. Put money in, take money out.

Race 9: Listed Australian Turf Club Trophy (1200m)

It is a very competitive way to end the afternoon, with a couple of nice horses set to do battle, including the unbeaten Orbisyn. We are confident that the David Vandyke-trained galloper will suffer his first defeat on Saturday to the hands of SHOOTING FOR GOLD. The Steven O’Dea & Matthew Hoysted-trained chestnut is a classy sprinter and he looks to have come back well based on what we saw three weeks ago in the Ascot Handicap at Eagle Farm. He can be closer in the run on Saturday from barrier three under Ben Thompson and give this field a sprinting lesson.
