Feature Race Race 8 – Group 3 Hawkesbury Gold Cup

Hawkesbury will host metropolitan racing on Saturday as the curtains close on the Sydney Autumn Carnival. Nine races will be run and won, including the Hawkesbury Crown, Hawkesbury Guineas and Hawkesbury Gold Cup all at Group 3 level. The track is currently rated a Good 4 and the rail is in the true position, which should see every runner get their chance. HorseBetting.com.au has covered all nine races and found you the best bets and quaddie numbers for the day, as well as the top four selections for each event.

Race 1 – 2YO Clarendon Stakes (1400m)

Gleneagles was scratched from a winnable race at Warwick Farm during the week to be kept for this, and with only six opponents here, it looks a good move. The son of Capitalist missed the start in his most recent race which was here at Hawkesbury, but he still proved far too good over 1000m. He looks as though 1400m will suit him down to the ground, with the JJ Atkins Stakes in Queensland his target this Winter, it is just a question of whether or not the month between runs will suit.

Selections: 1-2-4-3

Race 2 – Benchmark 78 (1500m)

This is one of the trickiest races of the afternoon and the market has certainly struggled to split them with equal favourites at $4.60. We have it down to about seven chances, so it certainly isn’t a race we are keen to get involved in, but we came out with Steely on top after a nice win at Kembla Grange last time out, beating Mensa Missile with a big gap back to third. The four-year-old son of All Too Hard did run third to Mo’unga and Lion’s Roar in a Benchmark 64 back in August which rates highly.

Selections: 9-10-8-7

Race 3 – Class 2 Highway Handicap (1400m)

The country horses come together in the third to contest this Class 2 Highway over 1400m and it’s another tough race. Nonetheless, we are with a last start winner in Tipping Point who raced away to win by nearly three lengths in a Country Only Maiden at Orange on the 16th of April. The three-year-old gelding started odds on in that race and after being 11th at the 800m, he quickly gathered them up to win well. This is harder, but he won well and Grant Buckley is a big advantage.

Selections: 9-1-3-6

Race 4 – Benchmark 78 (1800m)

John O’Shea and Rachel King combine in the fourth with Mr Gee who looks a touch underrated by the market. The three-year-old gelding won back to back races over the Summer at Kembla Grange and Hawkesbury respectively, with the later coming over 2000m by a margin of 3.25 lengths before contesting the Grand Prix Stakes at Group 3 level at Eagle Farm where he ran a solid fourth behind The Elanora. He was pretty plain last start when fresh, but his first-up record isn’t that great, so we are forgiving. He’s been to the trials and the blinkers will be used for the first time on Saturday which is a plus.

Race 5 – Group 3 Hawkesbury Crown (1300m)

The first of the features sees the fillies and mares contest the Hawkesbury Crown and we are keen on the favourite in Athiri. She was good to us over the summer, winning four races so we are going to stay loyal to the Godolphin mare. She ran second in a photo to Krone in the Magic Millions Fillies & Mares Classic on the Gold Coast, and Krone has franked that form all Autumn. She has trialled well at this track in the lead up to her first assignment so she should be going close.

Selections: 5-2-12-1

Best Bet of the DayRace 5 – Athiri (#5) $2.90 with Sportsbet

Race 6 – Listed Hawkesbury Rush (1100m)

This is a deadest lottery! The Listed Hawkesbury Rush has attracted a capacity field of 14 after scratchings and we have found it extremely hard to separate them. Embracer is first up off a 42-week spell and he has been gelded which should make this Waterhouse & Bott gelding the ultimate sprinter. He has had three trials in preparation for this and should be right there on the speed from barrier eight under Tim Clark. No confidence here.

Selections: 11-8-1-3

Race 7 – Group 3 Hawkesbury Guineas (1400m)

We are hoping the form from the South Pacific Stakes stacks up on Saturday, and if it does, Ellsberg will be extremely hard to beat in the Hawkesbury Guineas. The three-year-old colt ran them into the ground in his first-up win, beating Private Eye and Rainbow Connection by three lengths. Drawn in barrier four, Tim Clark will take him straight to the front and it should be all over red rover. Second up and at 1400m is ideal for this son of Spill The Beans.

Selections: 3-5-2-6

Race 8 – Group 3 Hawkesbury Gold Cup (1600m)

The feature race of the afternoon sees just a field of 11 runners contest the $200,000 Hawkesbury Gold Cup. Royal Celebration hit the line well just seven days behind Rocha Clock and Nudge which looks good enough to win this. The five-year-old entire has won at 1600m in the past and has placed second in his only go at Hawkesbury, so he gets conditions to suit. Drawn well in barrier four, expect him to be thereabouts in what looks a moderate tempo. Greysful Glamour and Purple Sector are two horses that can bounce back.

Selections: 7-1-3-5

Race 9 – Benchmark 78 (1300m)

European import for Australian Bloodstock, Grande Rumore looks well placed after a gritty win in her Australian debut. The four-year-old mare was held up at a crucial stage in the straight at Canterbury on April 7th, before arriving just in time to beat Willowheart over 1200m. Now three weeks between runs and up to 1300m, we expect to see her eating up the extra trip and very hard to beat. She drops 3kg and gets Jason Collett in the saddle from barrier two which are big advantages too.

Selections: 6-1-9-12
