The second of the feature races from Hawkesbury on Saturday is the Group 3 Hawkesbury Gold Cup over the mile. A field of 11 has been assembled for the $200,000 event, with Royal Celebration topping the market at $4 ahead of Greysful Glamour at $4.50. Again, there does look a fair bit of speed in the race, with Greysful Glamour, Miss Siska, Surreal Image and Archedemus all natural front runners. Purple Sector and Royal Celebration should be just behind the speed.

Five-year-old entire Royal Celebration will be on the seven day backup after running third to Rocha Clock and Nudge last weekend over the 1400m in a Benchmark 100. The son of Excelebration has never missed the place when third-up, and he has won at the mile in the past, so he gets a lot to suit. While the seven day turnaround will be a new style for him, he has won on a 10 day turnaround in the past, so he should benefit from this quick backup. Drawn well in barrier four for Sam Clipperton, expect to see him just tucked away behind the speed and finishing home strongly over the top.

Greysful Glamour has the class to lead all of the way, and she is going to get a run to suit. She has had four runs this campaign which has seen her finish last in two of those occasions, but they came in the All Star Mile on a wet track which she hates and the Group 1 Queen of the Turf on a questionable Good 4, so she can be forgiven. Back to a much more suited grade and on a Good 4 track with her favourite jockey Rachel King aboard, she should be able to hold the front and be very hard to catch around Hawkesbury at the mile.

John Thompson’s classy five-year-old Purple Sector comes into this race third-up after being somewhat lacklustre in the Doncaster Prelude last start. The son of Pins won the Spring Mile at Randwick in October and then won the Melbourne Cup Day Plate at Flemington when third-up which was his last win, so he should be peaking in this over the mile. Drawn barrier five, he should get a cozy run alongside Royal Celebration and can be doing his best work late.
