Harlow Mist impresses in VRC Oaks audition
Sydney trainer John Sargent, renowned for his expertise with staying types, showcased a potential contender for the VRC Oaks as Harlow Mist secured an impressive victory in the Kennedy Oaks Preview (1800m) at Flemington on Sunday.
Jockey Mick Dee provided a flawless ride, positioning Harlow Mist just behind the leaders before making a timely move in the straight.
The daughter of Contributer demonstrated her strength, crossing the finish line ahead of Konasana and Everlasting Kiss.
Sargent praised the three-year-old filly’s progression, noting her undefeated record in three starts, with prior wins at Goulburn and Scone.
“It was a big jump up; she has just been winning in the country but she has got a decent-sized heart in her and she showed that today,” said Sargent.
“It was a fork-in-the-road for her today as to whether we give her a break and look at the autumn or carry on with it.
“After that performance, we will carry on.”
He also expressed confidence in her ability to handle the longer distances, setting sights on the Group 2 Wakeful Stakes (2000m) and the Group 1 VRC Oaks (2500m) during Melbourne Cup week.
Sargent reminisced about discovering Harlow Mist at the New Zealand sales, emphasising her strong staying pedigree.
He noted her determination and projected further improvement as she tackles longer distances.
“She probably has as much class as a So Dazzling who won this race last year.
“She hasn’t got as much brilliance as a Kirramosa or a Luvaluva but she is a very determined type that once she gets out over further will be even harder to beat.”
Harlow Mist, a product of Wentwood Grange, was acquired for $85,000 by Tricolours Racing & Syndications.
Remarkably, she is one of three undefeated three-year-olds from the Karaka 2022 draft of the esteemed Cambridge nursery. Her lineage traces back to the stakes-placed mare Sila Jasak and the champion galloper Grand Archway, known for victories in the Group 1 VRC Oaks (2500m) and the Group 1 Australian Oaks (2400m).
