What Happy Valley Races
Where Happy Valley Racecourse – Wong Nai Chung Rd, Happy Valley, Hong Kong
When Wednesday, January 10, 2024
First Race 7:10pm HKT (10:10pm AEDT)

Hong Kong racing looks to the bright lights of the city circuit at Happy Valley as they get set to host a massive eight-race program. The Group 3 January Cup (1800m) headlines the meeting, with the feature event attracting a quality 12-horse field. The rail moves to the B course for the evening, and with no rain predicted to hamper proceedings, expect pristine conditions prior to the opening race at 7:10pm local time.

January Cup Top Tip: Sword Point

Sword Point returns to a more suitable grade on Wednesday evening after trying to tackle Group 1 company in the Hong Kong Cup (2000m) on December 10. He was by no means disgraced and finished off third best of all Hong Kong gallopers engaged, finishing 2.5 lengths away in a blanket finish. He was only third-up into the preparation with improvement to come and it appears the Frankie Lor barn have targeted this race a long way out. Hugh Bowman takes the reins from gate six, and with a favourable map to sit closer than mid-field, we’d be shocked if Sword Point wasn’t in the mix as they turn for home.

Best Bet at Happy Valley: Simply Maverick

Simply Maverick should be chasing his third straight victory for the Ricky Yiu barn but had no luck last start at this course and distance on December 20. He became unbalanced at the start, and it left the son of Sebring chasing on the three-wide line a long way out, knuckling down to the task when powering into a third-place finish. His win prior to that effort was sensational when leading all the way to score by 4.8 lengths, and if Vincent Ho can ping the lids adopting similar tactics, Simply Maverick will prove too classy for this lot.

Next Best at Happy Valley: Red Hare King

Consecutive runner-up performances suggest Red Hare King is ready to win and looks perfectly placed by trainer Tony Cruz. He drew barrier nine last start at Happy Valley on December 20 and had no choice but to sit outside the leader. He showed plenty of tenacity to cling on for the minor money in a race we’re willing to trust the form, and with barrier one bolstering his chances in this event, Red Hare King will go close to adding his second career victory to the resume.

Best Value at Happy Valley: Great Achiever

After a moderate debut performance by Great Achiever, we’re willing to follow the son of Savabeel as he makes his second-up appearance for the Benno Yung stable. He found the 1000m journey too sharp on December 20 and was unable to muster speed from barrier 10, dragging back to last when turning for home. Once getting to the outside of runners, the four-year-old showed an electric turn-of-foot, suggesting the 1200m would be a major benefit to his chances. Gate one should give Great Achiever every chance and should give followers a terrific sight at each-way odds with top horse racing bookmakers.
