Recent Geelong Cup winners

  • Amade burst through a needle-eye gap late to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat in the Group 3 Geelong Cup. The son of Casamento has since shortened from $201.00 to $101.00 in the 2023 Melbourne Cup betting markets. Although the 10-year-old gelding missed the jump by three lengths, jockey Zac Spain got his mount to settle at the rear of the field and was travelling nicely on the home turn but needed a run to appear. When the gap did open between a slowing King Frankel ($9.00) and Ashrun ($4.80), Spain pushed the button and Amade sprinted the best of his rivals to drive through and find the line first ahead of Ashrun and Sir Lucan ($19.00) in a blanket finish. The race favourite, First Immortal ($2.90), received a great ride from Jamie Kah, but when he hit the final 400m, the son of Churchill didn’t have anything to give and weakened through the pack to finish seventh – beaten by just over a length.
  • Emissary took out the 2022 Geelong Cup to punch his ticket into the 2022 Melbourne Cup which was just over a week away. The six-year-old gelding won his second race of the preparation for Mike Moroney, after taking out the Listed Heatherlie Handicap on August 27 at Caulfield. Emissary won at big odds for the punters that followed him into the Geelong Cup, jumping as a $17 roughie; however, he won like a good thing, leaving Surefire and the rest of the field in his wake as he flew down the outside. The eventual winner sat at the back of the field, and as they rounded the turn, Blake Shinn got him to the very outside and he ran by race favourite Surefire to claim the $500,000 feature by just over a length.
  • On the back of three consecutive black-type placings, Symon Wilde’s Tralee Rose got her moment in the 2021 Geelong Cup. Having settled in the gun seat under Dean Holland, Tralee Rose was able to capitalise on some tiring leader on the home turn and when asked to quicken, did so nicely. Dr Drill, who had trailed Tralee Rose throughout the run, loomed as a danger, but Tralee Rose would go on to reward favourite punters in fine style.
  • Having finished seventh in the 2019 Geelong Cup, the Anthony & Sam Freedman-trained Steel Prince managed to claim the same race 12 months later. Having been 35th in the Melbourne Cup Order of Entry prior to the race, Steel Prince needed to win to book a spot in the Melbourne Cup a fortnight later. Win it he did, Jye McNeil managed to lift the classy stayer past the brave Le Don De Vie in the shadows of the winning post.
  • The Charlie Fellowes-trained Prince Of Arran booked a spot in the Melbourne Cup after claiming the Geelong Cup. Having settled second behind a hot speed set by Haky, Michael Walker had clear air at all times aboard Prince Of Arran. Once asked to quicken, Prince Of Arran did so nicely and managed to hold off the fast-finishing True Self in a ding-dong finish to the Geelong Cup.
