What Flemington Races
Where Flemington Racecourse – 448 Epsom Rd, Flemington VIC 3031
When Saturday, August 5, 2023
First Race 11:50am AEST

Feature racing returns to Flemington on Saturday afternoon with the Group 3 Aurie’s Star Handicap (1200m) headlining a bumper 10-race program. With up to 10mm of rain forecast on Friday, we expect to be racing on a track rated around a Soft 7, despite the current Soft 5 rating. The rail comes out 10m, but as always, Flemington should play fairly throughout. The action gets underway at 11:50am AEST.

Aurie’s Star Handicap Top Tip – General Beau

General Beau was only grabbed late by Ingratiating in the Group 3 Bletchingly Stakes last time out and will look to turn the tables this weekend. The now five-year-old hasn’t won in close to two years, but he hardly runs a poor race. He has three minor placings in a row, all in races not too much stronger than this. With Damian Lane hopping back on board, and in a race where he can take a sit and run on, General Beau looks a great play with online bookmakers in Saturday’s Group 3 feature.

Best Bet at Flemington – Benedetta

Resuming from a spell, Jason Warren’s Benedetta has the Group 1 Manikato Stakes (1200m) as her long-range goal. Tatum Bull’s 3kg claim gets the four-year-old mare in with 57kg in BM84 company. She won her latest jumpout with ease under a hold, and with the likes of Najem Suhail and Sartorial Splendor set to run this at a decent clip, the race sets up perfectly. Her win in the Inglis Sprint during the autumn is hard to forget, and if she brings anything close to that effort, Benedetta simply wins this.

Next Best at Flemington – Mimi’s Award

This five-year-old has won three of her last four starts, including her last two at Flemington. The Hayes brothers have high hopes for their stayer, and despite dropping back from 2800m to the 2530m, she looks too good for this lot. She got the better of Mostly Cloudy on July 15 and meets that runner even better at the weights this time around. If Laura Lafferty can have Mimi’s Award settled midfield with cover, the apprentice hoop’s 3kg claim will prove beneficial inside the last 800m as Mimi’s Award finishes over the top of some vulnerable leaders.

Best Value at Flemington – Flying Concello

The Hayes team continues to raise the bar for Flying Concello and the filly continues to respond in fine fashion. She gets a crack at Saturday grade following wins at Bendigo and Sandown and has shown she will relish the sting out of the ground. Having won from the rear of the field two runs back and then up on speed last start, Matt Cartwright will have options when jumping from barrier eight. With plenty of early speed in the race, look for the pair to find cover midfield before hitting the line vigorously.

Best Value

Race 3 – Silk#2 Flying Concello (8)

3yo Filly | T: Ben, Will & JD Hayes | J: Matt Cartwright (a1.5) (60kg)
