Flemington racing tips – March 3, 2021

It is Super Saturday at Flemington with nine races set down for judgement. The two Group 1 events, the Newmarket Handicap and Australian Cup, are the joint-features on the day, and both fields include plenty of proven stars. With the track rated a Good 4 and the rail out 5m for the entire circuit, we should see some high-class racing throughout the day.

Race 1 – TBV Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes

NEXT BEST

Kicking off Super Saturday is the Group 3 TBV Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes for the two-year-old fillies. We will be hoping to build a bit of a bank early in the day when La Rocque steps out for her second start. The John McArdle-trained filly was a dominant all-the-way winner on debut at Pakenham on February 4 when kicking clear at the top of the home straight. In a field bereft of early speed, La Rocque looks to get it all her own way out in front and will be hard to catch with Jamie Mott retaining the ride.

Race 2 – 2021 Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour

We are hoping the James Cummings-trained Conceited can bounce back off an average run in the Group 3 Zeditave Stakes at Caulfield a fortnight ago. In the colt’s first run of the year, he was well beaten by the up-and-coming Oxley Road. Having already tasted success at Flemington, we expect Conceited to benefit from his first-up run at Caulfield. Annavisto is a classy runner at short odds, but we would rather take the $8 on offer for Conceited.

Selections: 1-7-5-8

Race 3 – Furphy Ale March Stakes

BEST BET

The Listed March Stakes sees the return of the Thousand Guineas winner from the spring, Odeum. On the back of a flying preparation in the spring, we expect that the Mick Price-trained filly has returned with big intentions for the autumn. Having won the Listed Jim Moloney Stakes at 1400m in her first prep, she should have a fair bit of class on this field. With a 5.5kg weight advantage on So Si Bon and 2kg on Pretty Brazen, we are expecting a perfect ride by Michael Walker from barrier one.

Race 4 – Mss Security Sires’ Produce Stakes

This year’s Sires’ Produce Stakes looks to be a match race between Paulele and our top pick, Lightsaber. Having strung together consecutive victories at Sandown, the Peter Moody-trained colt comes to Flemington for the first time and will be looking to build on a near-perfect start to his career. He maps to take up the running with his key rival on his heels throughout, but his rock-hard fitness and winning form should get him over the line.

Selections: 3-2-9-1

Race 5 – Incognitus Stakes

The Listed Incognitus Stakes sees a field of nine three-year-olds battle it out for the $140,000 on offer. The favourite, Oxley Road, has been nothing short of sensational in his first two career starts, none more so than when he smashed his rivals in the Zeditave Stakes at Caulfield in an all-the-way victory. Having already won down the Flemington straight on debut, there should be no issues handling the step back to 1100m. Marboosha brings Sydney form down to Flemington, whilst Pinkham will look to bounce back off a poor first-up run behind La Mexicana. The interesting runner is Ranting, who will need to lug 61kg down the straight but was not beaten far in the Oakleigh Plate and will appreciate the drop in grade.

Selections: 2-1-5-7

Race 6 – Seppelt Wines Newmarket Handicap

The first of two Group 1 races on the card is the Newmarket Handicap, which opens the quaddie on Saturday afternoon. The prestigious race has attracted a massive field of 18 sprinters, yet it is hard to ignore September Run based her massive finish in the Lightning Stakes. Having already won the Coolmore Stud Stakes in the spring down Flemington’s Straight Six, we expect Craig Williams to steer her to victory and make it four wins from five starts at Racing HQ. The hardest to beat is the joint Oakleigh Plate winner Celebrity Queen, who will make her run closer to the rail than September Run will, with Swats That and Brooklyn Hustle expected to be close to the finish.

Selections: 14-5-18-10

Race 7 – Lexus Matron Stakes

A field of 10 will duke it out in the Group 3 Matron Stakes for the fillies and mares over 1400m. Anthony Freedman and Jamie Kah will be looking to continue their strong partnership when they combine with Lunakorn, who was a close third in the Group 3 Mannerism Stakes. The 1.5-length defeat was her first go at black-type racing, and with two runner-up finishes and a win in three second-up runs, she is the one to beat on Saturday. With Quantum Mechanic and Kansino key dangers, Lunakorn will need to be on her game to take this out, but her best is good enough to beat this field.

Selections: 7-6-2-9

Race 8 – TAB Australian Cup

BEST VALUE

In this year’s Group 1 Australian Cup, you could make a case for all but one or two in the field. We have settled on Steel Prince at a nice each-way price to bring up his third win at Flemington on the back of a strong fourth-place finish in the Group 2 Peter Young Stakes. On that day he was only beaten by a length by Paradee, who also has genuine claims to this race after winning her last three, while Fifty Stars will be flying home late if his run in the Blamey Stakes is anything to go by. Last week’s Group 1 Australian Guineas blowout showed that anything is possible, and the step up in class might suit someone like Defibrillate.

Selections: 8-3-17-12

Race 9 – TAB Kewney Stakes

Rounding out the mammoth Super Saturday card is the Group 2 Kewney Stakes for three-year-old fillies over 1600m. On the back of a second-place finish in The Vanity, we are hoping Personal will appreciate the step up in distance to the mile and can continue her fine form at Flemington. Dropping 3.5kg off her last run, you would expect the class she has on her side will be enough to get the job done. The clear dangers look to be Chica Fuerte and Miss Guggenheim, but the Dabernig & Hayes filly is the one we want to be with in the get-out stakes.

Selections: 1-3-10-2
