2021 Newmarket Handicap betting preview

The time-honoured Newmarket Handicap is the first of two Group 1 races at Flemington on Saturday. Run down the famous Straight Six, the $1.25 million race has drawn a massive field of 18 sprinters headed by the impressive September Run at $2.30 odds. Some of Australia’s best sprinters have taken out the Newmarket, including 2020 winner Bivouac.

With plenty of pace expected over the 1200m, the tempo setters look to come from track specialist Sirius Suspect and the ever-consistent WA galloper Indian Pacific. Meanwhile, Brooklyn Hustle will give the field a fair start from the rear of the field.

It is almost impossible to go past September Run (#14) on the back of her run in the Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning Stakes, where she absolutely stormed home to only go down by a half-length to Nature Strip. The query in that race was always going to be if she could run a quick 1000m, so the rise to 1200m second up looks ideal. With only 54kg and Craig Williams on her back, this looks to be her race to lose. Expected the Chris Waller filly to settle towards the second half of the field and then burn them off around the 300m mark with her electric turn of foot.

It is hard to find anything wrong about the dead-heat win Celebrity Queen (#5) picked up in the Oakleigh Plate a fortnight ago when storming home over the last 150m. She will only improve over the 1200m second up and looks to be the hardest runner for September Run to beat in the Newmarket Handicap. William Pike is yet to run outside the quinella in seven rides on Celebrity Queen, racking up five wins and two runner-up finishes. Expect the pair to settle towards the inside half of the pack and then give September Run a scare with a well-time sprint.

The likes of Swats That (#18), Imaging (#3) and Brooklyn Hustle (#10) are all expected to be there or thereabouts in the finish, but they will need to be at their absolute best to go past September Run.
