2021 Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes betting preview

The Group 3 TBV Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes kickstarts Super Saturday down Flemington’s Straight Six this weekend. A small field of seven two-year-old fillies has come together, with all but one runner – Tempest Charm – having any experience down the Flemington straight in race-day conditions. Minhaaj won the race in 2020, while the handy Shoals is also among the past winners.

With a majority of the field being backmarkers, the race favourite, La Rocque, will have a quiet time up in front. The 2021 TBV Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes is set to jump at 12:20pm AEDT.

John McArdle has made it known that his current crop of two-year-olds is among the best he has ever had under his tutelage. He backed up that claim with Tycoon Humma’s win last weekend down the Flemington straight, and we will be looking for an early chip-up with La Rocque (#3) at $1.80. The filly gave nothing else a chance at Pakenham on February 4 when an all-the-way winner on debut. When Jamie Mott asked for an extra effort at the 300m mark, the daughter of Kuroshio kicked clear and showed she has plenty of potential going forward. It looks like she will have the lead all to herself, in which case she should be too fast for her rivals over the 1200m.

The clear danger looks to come from the Anthony Freedman yard in Flying Evelyn (#2), who did what most juveniles can’t do at The Valley and charged home from the middle of the pack. She did her best work late, which suggests that she should see out the 1200m, but it remains to be seen whether she is sharp enough to run down a leader who will run the race the way she wants it to be run.

The best of the rest looks to be De Long Star (#4), who chased home a smart one at Sandown on February 24 and put enough of a gap on the remainder of the field to suggest she can be a knockout hope in the TBV Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes. She will be on the heels of Flying Evelyn, and if the second favourite can give her a nice cart into the race, she may just finish over the top of the two market leaders.
