Feehan Stakes favourite cops tricky barrier draw

Saturday’s Group 2 Feehan Stakes (1600m) at Moonee Valley has attracted a strong field of 15 runners looking to book a spot in the Cox Plate (2040m).

The Feehan Stakes is the sole ‘win and you’re in’ race for the weight-for-age championship of Australasia, and that status is reflected in the quality of the field.

Among the 15 runners are three former Group 1 winners and over $12.6 million in prizemoney won.

Heading the Feehan Stakes betting markets is the undefeated Globe, trained by Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr.

Online bookmakers have him marked as a +200 chance for Saturday’s $500,000 feature.

This will be Globe’s maiden foray into stakes-level racing having progressed through the grades during the autumn with four straight wins, including a last-start BM100 victory at Sandown on May 6.

Globe will need to overcome a tricky draw in the Feehan Stakes, jumping from barrier 12 under Jamie Kah.

Joining Globe towards the top of the market is last-start Moonee Valley winner Deny Knowledge (+600).

Both Goldman (+1200) and Lunar Flare (+2500) are ballot-exempt for the 2023 Melbourne Cup and are both set to kick off their campaign with a run in the Feehan.

Mr Brightside managed to claim victory in the Feehan Stakes last year before going on to finish seventh in the Cox Plate.

The Group 2 Feehan Stakes is race nine on the Moonee Valley program on Saturday, September 9.
