Eagle Farm tips, best bets and quaddie selections for April 17

What Queensland Guineas Day – Eagle Farm
Where Eagle Farm Racecourse – 230 Lancaster Rd, Ascot QLD
When Saturday, May 01, 2021
First Race 11:30pm AEST
Feature Race Race 7 – Group 2 Queensland Guineas

The first day of May also signals the first day of the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival and with nine races including two Group 2s, it will` whet the appetite. Overcast conditions have been the order of the week in Brisbane, and although a little bit of rain is forecast, the Eagle Farm track drains well so we should be on a Good 4 with the rail out 3.5m for the entire circumference. The first of nine jumps at 11:30am, with the Queensland Guineas and Victory Stakes set to face the starter at 3:09pm and 3:49pm respectively. Horsebetting.com.au has gone over every race at Eagle Farm to give you the best insight into finding a winner on Saturday.

Race 1 – Benchmark 75 Handicap (1400m)

It is a tricky way to start the day with a number of last start winners and plenty of different form lines, so we are going to look a bit wider. We are surprised to see Alpendurada the favourite despite an impressive last start victory as he can be hard to catch. We were impressed with how Maslow won at the Sunshine Coast on April 18th in an Open Handicap over 1200m, so we are siding with him at the $12 under Jim Byrne from the good gate. He does rise 6kg but he is back in class and up to the 1400m should suit. Westlink is the other who represents value after a luckless second to Enterprise Keren at this track and distance a fortnight ago.

Race 2 – Benchmark 78 Handicap (2212m)

The stayers get their chance in the second and we think the market has got this right. Traduce and Bold Executive ran first and second in an almost identical race on April 17 which saw Traduce win by 1.5 lengths. Bold Executive meets his rival 2.5kg better off this time around and has drawn well in barrier five which is enough for us to side with the favourite here. The three-year-old son of Top Echelon should be able to find a handy spot in the first three or four, and with a lack of speed in the race he will be hard to run down. Jim Byrne can win the first two races on the card.
Selections: 8-4-1-3

Race 3 – Open Handicap (1815m)

A field of eight will contest this 1815m Open Handicap, and one of the bets of the day appears. Chris Waller’s So You Win was great first-up over the unsuitable 1400m, finishing strongly into third behind Get Stuck In and Junction, who he meets again here. The So You Think gelding meets Get Stuck In 1.5kg better at the weights and stays level with Junction, so the extra 415m should play in his favour. The six-year-old raced terrifically over the Summer, and that form has stood up. Drawn the inside under Luke Dittman, he can be midfield on the rails and be pushing his way into the clear in the final 400m.
Selections: 4-5-2-1

Race 4 – 3YO Quality Handicap (1300m)

Best Bet Of The Day

A good field of three-year-olds will contest this 1300m Quality Handicap, and again we are with the market. Desleigh Forster and Jim Byrne combine with Georgie’s Pride who is looking to make it three straight wins and her fifth win from six runs this campaign. The Better Than Ready filly bolted in in a 3YO Benchmark 70 at this track over 1200m on April 14, winning by 4.25 lengths, which backed up her dominant 2.75 length victory in a similar race to this over the 1400m. She has won four times at Eagle Farm, which is vital, and she has drawn to lead from barrier four. Not sure how they beat her here.

Best BetRace 4 – Georgie’s Pride (#2) $2.80 with Sportsbet

Race 5 – Class 6 Handicap (1600m)

Best Value Bet

It’s a pretty average bunch in this Class 6, so we are going to look a bit wider and go down to the bottom of the page with Mocambo. This four-year-old son of Deep Field has had two runs in Queensland, winning one and being narrowly defeated in the other. The Michael Lakey-trained gelding came from last on April 14 at Eagle Farm against the pattern to be beaten half a length by Firebox, who has since won at the Sunshine Coast franking the form. He has placed second in his two previous attempts at the mile, and he has handled Eagle Farm. Taylor Marshall knows the horse well now having ridden him in both Queensland starts, and with only 54kg from barrier four he should take plenty of beating.

Best ValueRace 5 – Mocambo (#11) $13.00 with Sportsbet

Race 6 – Listed Dalrello Stakes (1000m)

The first of the black-type races sees a field of 14 two-year-olds line up in the Listed Dalrello Stakes. It is a wide open affair with $4.20 the shortest horse in the field, so there is a definite chance to have an each-way play. Stellar Magic was brilliant winning here on April 17 over this distance, especially since she was held up for a fair bit of it. Once she found clear running it was all over bar the shouting, so she goes in on top in what is a tougher race. Refero was a brilliant winner on debut for Tony Gollan and the form has stood up out of that race with Tiger Heart winning comfortably last Saturday at Doomben. They’re the two we want to back.
Selections: 8-5-6-7

Race 7 – Group 2 Queensland Guineas (1600m)

Next Best Bet

Group 2 racing is underway in the seventh, and after two scratchings on Thursday morning, we are left with just a field of eight. Despite being a proud Queenslander and hoping that a Queensland-trained horse can win the Queensland Guineas, we think Joe Pride’s Private Eye is a shoe in here. The son of Al Maher was super when second to Ellsberg at Randwick on Day Two of The Championships after being wide and over-racing throughout. The gelding loves winning and has a good record with Brenton Avdulla in the saddle who reunites with him in this. Drawn barrier seven, he will be back and running on. Apache Chase is the danger, while we are interested to see what Kukeracha can do from a Queensland Derby perspective.

Race 8 – Group 2 Victory Stakes (1200m)

The Victory Stakes is the other feature race on Saturday, and while it is a very strong field full of mainly Queensland sprinters, we can’t go past the favourite Trekking at Weight For Age. The dual-Group 1 winner trialled the house down at Hawkesbury in his most recent hit out which should bring him on perfectly for this first-up assignment. While the Stradbroke Handicap looks the obvious target for the 2019 winner, the handicapper might beat him, so we suspect James Cummings and the boys in blue might be trying to target the weight-for-age races instead and hence will be hoping to win early. They bypassed Adelaide and a bid to go back to back in the Goodwood Handicap too.
Selections: 1-7-10-2

Race 9 – Class 6 Plate (1200m)

Despite only carrying Class 6 status, this shapes as one of the races of the day between Fender and Garibaldi. Fender was brilliant in his first Queensland run, winning by 1.75 lengths at Doomben over 1200m and trainer Brett Cavanough has pretty much declared him in this and given a strong push for him towards the Stradbroke in a little over a month’s time. Garibaldi was scratched from the Victory Stakes in preference for this where he was a $9 chance, so to pass up the big prizemoney suggests Tony Gollan and the team are confident he can beat Fender. The wide barrier is a concern, but his gate speed can see him up outside the lead and be able to sprint quickly late. His trial was super too. It’s a flip of the coin between the two market fancies, but we are siding with the local for now.
