Group Three Betting Guide
Date: Saturday, September 27, 2025
Location: Rosehill Racecourse – Sydney, New South Wales
Prize Money: $250,000
Distance: 2400m

The Colin Stephen Quality is a Group 3 race held at Rosehill racecourse for horses aged three-year-old and older, run under quality and handicap conditions.

After being classified as a Principal Race from 1870 until 1978, the Colin Stephen Quality has chopped and changed between Listed and Group 3 grade; however, since 1987 the race has been run as a Group 3 contest.

All bar three editions of the Colin Stephen Quality have been run over 2400m, with only 1870, 1871 and 2001 run over an alternate distance.

The Colin Stephen Quality is a traditional lead up for The Metropolitan, as the winner is exempt from ballot and penalty in the race. Due to this, several horses have done the double over the years.

The John O’Shea-trained Athabascan won the 2023 edition of the Colin Stephen Quality, with Tom Sherry producing a scintillating ride for the stable.

Notable winners of the Colin Stephen Quality include Amelie’s Star (2015), No Wine No Song (2010), Railings (2005), Coco Cobanna (2000), Vita Man (1999), Natski (1988), Gunsynd (1972), Roman Consul (1968), Hydrogen (1953), Delta (1950 & 1951), Flight (1944), Peter Pan (1935), Phar Lap (1930 & 1931), Gloaming (1924) and Poitrel (1918, 1919, & 1920).

Recent Colin Stephen Quality results

  • The Chris Waller-trained First Light ($4.40) has booked his ticket to the Group 1 Metropolitan Handicap (2400m) after a dominant display in the Group 3 Colin Stephen Quality (2400m) at Rosehill. It was a big step-up in grade for the son of Dubawi after contest BM78 company last time out, however, he seemed to relish the Soft 6 conditions on offer as he picked up his first win at Rosehill at start 12. Tommy Berry was happy to bide his time at the rear of the field, sitting last amongst the small field of seven throughout the journey, as James McDonald and Changingoftheguard ($5.00) strode to the front ticking over some moderate sectionals. The race didn’t change complexion in the middle stages, with Canberra Legend ($9.00) sitting to his outside, while Campaldino ($4.80) and well-supported favourite Strathtay ($3.20) were stalking every step of the way. When asked for an effort in the final 600m, First Light slowly started to build the revs, and there was only one horse you wanted to be on as the six-year-old bound clear to score by 3.1 lengths, leaving Changingoftheguard and Strathtay to fight out the minor placings.
  • Athabascan produced a head-turning performance to win the 2023 Colin Stephen Quality, with trainer John O’Shea immediately declaring the star gelding would target the Melbourne Cup. Athabascan, coming off a win in the Listed CTC Cup, finished strongly to defeat Al Aabir by a short neck, with Desert Icon close behind in third. The half brother to group 1 winner Arapaho was paying $4.20 with bookies to win the group 3 Colin Stephen Quality and looks set for bigger things.
  • Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott claimed the 2022 Colin Stephen Quality with Grove Ferry (+320) after Tim Clark gave the six-year-old gelding a great ride to claim the Group 3 Colin Stephen Quality contest. After settling behind the leading duo of Fun Fact (+800) and race favourite Cadre Du Noir (+190), Tim Clark made his move at the top of the home straight to challenge the leaders. Once he made the move on Grove Ferry, James McDonald had to go for the favourite and the two battled down the length of the straight, with Grove Ferry getting the win by just over a neck on the line.
  • The lethal combination of Tim Clark and Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott combined with Entente (+360) to take out the Group 3 Colin Stephen Quality at Rosehill. Clark settled his gelding mid-field from barrier four, and as the field entered the home straight this son of Dundeel lengthened nicely down the outside to claim the race leader Fun Fact (+360) with 200m to go. There was never any real challenger to the winner, with Young Rascal (+1900) running home nicely to nab second place from the tiring leader.
  • The 2020 edition of the Colin Stephen Quality was run at a break neck tempo after the bolter of the field Zacada (+4000) took off to lead by over five lengths with 600m to go. Due to the quick tempo of the race, it was always going to suit Attorney (+340) who settled last in the running. Jason Collett took the eventual winner up the insdie running rail, but was slightly held up by Djukon (+550); however, when he got clear, the son of Makfi ran away to win by 1.3 lengths.
  • At his first start over 2400m, Stampede (+360) from the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott yard has lead all the way in the Group 3 Colin Stephen Quality at Rosehill. Stampede lead from start to finish and was never really challenged by his rivals during the run. Although Adam Hyeronimus had to go for his mount early in the home straight, he never gave up and was able to hold on from the fast-finishing Master Of Arts (+750) and Maurus (+2500).
