For the first time since Blue Diamond Stakes Day in late February, racing returns to Caulfield on Saturday afternoon with a nine-race card kicking off at 12:30pm AEST. We’re racing on a Good 4 with the rail in the true position, so we look set for a perfect day of racing at ‘The Heath’. HorseBetting’s James Herbert presents his best bets and quaddie picks, with odds provided by the leading online betting sites.
BEST BET AT CAULFIELD: ARKTIKA
The Ciaron Maher & David Eustace-trained Arktika will be looking to bounce back from a poor showing in the Kewney Stakes where the filly was shown to have an irregular heart rhythm post-race. Prior to that, the three-year-old filly put together dominant wins at the Pakenham 1400m and looks well placed to make it three wins from four starts to begin her career. The drop back to 1400m looks to be perfect for the bay filly and from barrier five looks set to gain a perfect run in transit. She has a sharp turn of foot which looks to be better than a majority of her rivals and should have a tactical advantage over some of the key market fancies being up on speed. The $4 on offer with online bookmakers looks a perfect price for Arktika who looks to be a clear best bet of the day.
NEXT BEST AT CAULFIELD: MYNUMEROUNO
The Nick Ryan-trained Mynumerouno is a genuine winning machine having won five of his six career starts, with his sole defeat coming when striking trouble pre-race and needing to be cleared by the vet before jumping. Since then he has won four in a row, including a gritty win at Echuca on March 13 when settling in the one-one and sprinting the better. This will be his first go at 1100m, but considering he holds wins at 955m, 1000m and 1200m, the trip will not be an issue. He certainly takes some riding, but with Rhys McLeod sticking on board, the $6 on offer with Unibet makes him a great bet. From barrier six, we expect to see Mynumerouno to be settled midfield with cover, where he can build through the gears and ultimately prove too hard to hold out.
BEST VALUE AT CAULFIELD: INFLUENTIAL JACK
Following a smart win in the St. Pat’s Cup at Geelong on March 19, we’re willing to give Influential Jack from the Simon Zahra yard a big push in the final race of the day. Having gained a perfect run in transit that day, the five-year-old gelding looks set to gain a similar run on Saturday from barrier three where he looks hard to hold out. There is little doubt that this is harder than what he has been racing in, but considering his win at Geelong came when resuming from a five-month spell, you would think he takes improvement out of that coming to Caulfield. Following Josh Richards’ 2kg claim, he goes around with 55.5kg and in our opinion, he is a much better horse than what the $16 quote with Neds suggest.
