Caulfield racing tips

What Caulfield Races
Where Caulfield Racecourse – 22 Station St, Caulfield East VIC 3145
When Saturday, June 24, 2023
First Race 11:50am AEST

On Saturday, for the first time this year, racing heads to Caulfield, where a nine-race program is scheduled. With persistent rain expected in Melbourne in the lead-up, expect the track to be no better than the current Soft 5 rating. The rail sticks to the true position for the meeting, which is set to get underway at 11:50am AEST.

Best Bet at Caulfield: Deepstrike

Deepstrike was a smart Sandown winner in similar company last time out and boasts strong form at Caulfield with two wins and a minor placing from his last four starts there. The son of Tavistock is already a winner at the Caulfield 2000m in his career, and with four wins and three minors on rain-affected going, we have no doubt that he will handle the conditions. He draws barrier two under Wiremu Pinn, who sticks on board, and considering he was aided by a rail-hugging ride last time out, a similar run with even luck should see Deepstrike prevail in the penultimate.

Best Bet

Race 8 – Silks#5 Deepstrike (2)

Next Best Bet at Caulfield: St Lawrence

St Lawrence has four wins and one minor placing to his name from five career starts, and with a bombproof first-up record, he is hard to go past in the opening leg of the quaddie. Despite this being his first look at Caulfield, the gelded son of Redwood has strong form behind a horse like Glory Daze and, in general, looks to be above BM84 quality. From barrier 13, look for Ben Allen to be aggressive early and try to land in the one-one or outside leader upon settling. If St Lawrence can cross and is near his best, he should win this.

Next Best

Race 6 – Silks#9 St Lawrence (13)

4yo Gelding | T: Ciaron Maher & David Eustace | J: Ben Allen (57kg)

Best Value at Caulfield: Tijuana

The Ben & JD Hayes-trained Tijuana was a smart winner of the Group 2 Stutt Stakes during the spring. At his following start, he was beaten a length when finishing fifth in the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas behind the likes of Golden Mile, Elliptical and Osipenko. His best performances have come when racing on wet ground, and if Luke Campbell can get across from barrier 13 and find cover, we’re hoping Tijuana’s class takes him into a race like this. A $10 price with online bookmakers for a Group 2 winner in a field like this is ludicrous.

Best Value

Race 9 – Silks#5 Tijuana (13)

3yo Colt | T: Ben & JD Hayes | J: Luke Campbell (a2) (58kg)
