Recent Caulfield Guineas Prelude results
- Clinton McDonald and Ben Melham have combined with Angel Capital to claim victory in the Group 3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude. The son of Harry Angel was given an 11 out of 10 ride by Melham as he weaved his way through traffic before sprinting past his rivals to take out the 1400m contest. Since returning to Melbourne to race on firmer tracks, Angel Capital has recorded back-to-back wins en route to the Group 1 Caulfield Guines in three weeks. Wanaruah and Feroce set a solid tempo at the front and looked to up the ante before the home turn, as many of the backmarkers began to struggle with 500m to go. Meanwhile, the likes of Private Life, Public Attention and the eventual winner were trucking along behind the speed and were ready to pounce. Melham switched back to the inside running rail to take over with 150m to go, and he was able to hold off the fast-finishing Public Attention and Wanaruah, who filled the placings.
- Steparty ($2.80) has produced a barnstorming effort to take out the Group 3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude (1400m), securing favourtism in what’s going to be an outstanding edition of the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) in three weeks’ time. The Paul Preusker-trained three-year-old was handled beautifully in a stop-start affair by jockey John Allen, electing to switch-off his mount towards the rear of the field. It would’ve been some nervous moments for favourite backers, as the main group of the field took off with 300m to travel, and you’d be forgiven for thinking Southport Tycoon ($9.00) and Scentify ($10.00) would be fighting out the finish. It wasn’t until the 200m pole John Allen asked for a supreme effort from Steparty, and he delivered in kind, going on to score an amazing victory at Caulfield. It’s now full steam ahead to what should be a mouthwatering edition of the Caulfield Guineas, with many of these horses likely to clash again, and perhaps even some Sydney form thrown into the mix after the Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m).
- As the rain came thumping down, so did Aft Cabin and Jamie Kah who showed the 2022 Caulfield Guineas Prelude field a clean pair of heels to kick off the bend and take home a first Group race of his short career. The three-year-old colt smashed his rivals in horrible conditions to give Godolphin another live chance to go back-to-back in the Caulfield Guineas after Anamoe’s win in the 2021 edition. After jumping quickly with the first few, the James Cummings-trained colt sat outside the lead and on the home corner he kicked clear and never looked like being beaten, as he won eased down by 3.5 lengths as the $2.15 favourite.
- Peter Moody bought up a second win in the Caulfield Guineas Prelude when his colt Lightsaber ($4.80) managed to kick clear of his rivals after racing up on speed. With Military Expert setting the pace, Luke Nolen was forced to sit outside the lead throughout on the eventual winner and when asked to quicken, did so and managed to grind his rivals into the ground over the 1400m. Brigatine ($6.50) simply could not bridge the gap that Lightsaber put on him at the 200m mark, going down by a half-length, with Military Expert ($7.50) a further neck back. Race favourite Alpine Eagle ($4.60) saw nothing but backsides in the home straight, with Craig Williams simply unable to get him out of a pocket.
- With another quality performance in the Group 3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude (1400m), Crosshaven ($5.50) extended his record to four wins from five starts and $305,338 in stakes – more than four times his purchase price. Ridden by Daniel Stackhouse, Crosshaven sat in second place for most of the race before quickening brilliantly in the straight. He soon reeled in the front-running National Choice ($51) and went clear to score by 1.75 lengths in front of Amish Boy ($7), with National Choice sticking on for third.
- Queensland raider Alligator Blood ($6) put his name up in lights when claiming the 2019 Group 3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude. Settled perfectly in second on the back of lead Roccabascerana ($20), Ryan Maloney had the eventual winner in clear air on the home turn and when asked to quicken, quickly put the leader away. He was seemingly vulnerable with 100m to go, but Maloney got the best out of his mount to hold off the fast-finishing Dalasan ($2.30) and Groundswell ($18), with less than a length separating the trifecta across the line.
