Team Hawkes and Tyler Schiller have combined with Briasa ($2.80) to claim victory in the $1 million Group 2 Hunter (1300m) at Newcastle on Saturday afternoon.

It was a tough win by the son of Smart Missile, with Schiller forced to sit three-wide throughout the journey as the four-year-old lifted in the concluding stages to secure his sixth win at start seven.

One of the rank outsiders with Bet365, Felix Majestic ($34.00), was looking to make every post a winner under Molly Bourke, with the five-year-old giving a bold sight at the each-way price,

Last year’s winner Coal Crusher ($10.00) appeared poised to take over in the final furlong but couldn’t match motors as Felix Majestic, giving a strong kick when asked to extend by Bourke, while Chrysaor ($21.00) was putting in the big strides from the back-half of the field.

Schiller had to get busy on the eventual winner at the top of the straight, and Briasa was happy to oblige, fighting off the canvas to secure an impressive win in the 2024 Hunter.

Stable representative Steve Thompson was delighted with the victory and suggested there’s still more to come from Briasa moving forward.

“He’s a real competitor,” Thompson said.

“He just wants to win.

“There’s still very much a lot of upside to this horse, he’s still raw and in 12 months’ time we’ll probably see him in an Everest.

“Just wanted to say thanks to my wife Tara.

“She recommended Mr. Johnson this horse to us. He’s just a pleasure to train.

“Straight to the paddock on Monday and we’ll get him ready for the autumn.”

Briasa has now firmed into a $26.00 chance with horse racing bookmakers for the 2025 Everest (1200m).
