Location: | Caulfield Racecourse – Melbourne, Victoria |
Prize Money: | $250,000 |
Distance: | 1000m |
The Blue Diamond Preview (Fillies) is traditionally the kick-off point for juvenile fillies looking to taste Group 1 glory in the Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) the following month.
Held at Caulfield on Australia Day, the 1000m scamper is accompanied by the Listed Blue Diamond Preview (1000m) for the juvenile colts and geldings.
Only three fillies have complete the Preview (F)/ Blue Diamond double, with Midnight Fever (1987), Miracles Of Life (2013) and Hayasugi (2024) achieving the feat.
In 2005, The Blue Diamond Preview fillies event was declared a no-race, as multiple horse’s gained an unfair advantage with their gates opening prematurely.

1st – Hayasugi (+450 )
2nd – Tobeornottobe (+130 )
3rd – Matisse (-111.11 )
Recent runnings of the Blue Diamond Preview (F):
- Race experience was the key for Hayasugi ($5.00) in the Group 3 Blue Diamond Preview (F), as the Clinton McDonald-trained filly proved a little too tough for her rivals at the end of the 1000m scamper at Caulfield. After jumping a little slow, Jamie Kah was able to get the daughter of Royal Meeting in the three-wide running line and allowed her to travel into the race on the home turn. Tobeornottobe ($6.50) appeared to have stolen the race when the likes of Shehungthemoon ($5.00) and I Only Wish ($21.00) started to fade out of the race; however, Hayasugi was flashing home down the outside and she got her head down in the final strides to nab the leader late. The three runners from the Anthony & Sam Freedman stable finished in a line of three, with Matisse ($5.00) finishing ahead of Shehungthemoon and Mindshift ($6.00).
- In a riveting contest that saw a remarkable shift in the final 100 metres, the Spirit Of Boom filly, De Sonic Boom showcased an impressive career debut by storming from second last to clinch victory in the Group 3 Blue Diamond Preview (1000m) at Sandown. Under the expert guidance of jockey Blake Shinn, riding for Anthony and Sam Freedman, De Sonic Boom surged through the field, threading between competitors to secure the win. The race unfolded with two promising Zoustar debutants, Zousuko and Sensical, giving chase. Zousuko, trained by John McArdle, finished a close second, trailing by three-quarters of a length, while Sensical, under the guidance of Peter Moody, claimed a commendable third, crossing the finish line just a long head behind.
- Manny Gelagotis enthusiastically labelled Miss Roseiano as a standout performer, hailing her as ‘one out of the box’ following a dazzling display of speed and tenacity that secured victory in the Group 3 Blue Diamond Preview (1000m) for fillies at Caulfield. In an impressive debut, Miss Roseiano, despite drifting from an initial tight quote to start at $14, clocked a notably faster time than Daumier just 35 minutes prior in the Blue Diamond Preview for the boys, completing the 1000-metre journey in 57.17 seconds compared to Daumier’s 57.75 seconds. Crossing the finish line, Miss Roseiano maintained a half-length lead over the unfortunate debutante, Written Swoosh ($12), while Latizia ($4 favourite) persevered for a commendable third place despite a wide run.
- Trainer Grahame Begg is optimistic about Dosh’s future performance, anticipating significant improvement from the filly, who maintained her flawless record with a triumph in the Group 3 Blue Diamond Preview (1000m) for fillies at Caulfield. Displaying a smart start from the inside barrier, Dosh ($5.50) was expertly guided at the front by jockey Jordan Childs, securing victory by half a length over Tayla’s Moment ($12), while the favoured Frost Flowers ($1.65) finished a close third by a half-head. Clocking a time of 58.17 seconds for the 1000m journey, Dosh’s performance, although half a second slower than General Beau in the colts and geldings division, showcased her potential.
- A Beautiful Night showcased her potential for the 2020 Blue Diamond with a stunning upset in the Group 3 Blue Diamond Fillies Preview at Caulfield. Breaking well from barrier five with jockey John Allen in control, A Beautiful Night tactically positioned herself along the fence, leading the field and conserving energy. John Allen’s strategic use of A Beautiful Night’s gate speed allowed them to maintain the lead throughout, with a powerful surge at the 200m mark sealing the victory. Despite being the favourite, Peter & Paul Snowden’s Fresh, who had previously secured a three-length win at Geelong, faced challenges, racing four wide and ultimately settling for second place. A Beautiful Night finished with a quarter-length advantage over Fresh ($3.60), while a photo finish confirmed third place for the victor’s stablemate, Unstoppabelle ($21).
