The Listed Bel Esprit Stakes is one of the featured events on the blockbuster Caulfield card on Saturday afternoon. HorseBetting.com.au brings to you our best bets, odds comparison and our $100 betting strategy for the race worth $140,000.

It will shock no one to see that speed demons Alfa Oro and Ancestry are predicted to lead this field over the 1100m trip, with the likes of Prophet’s Thumb and Lyre expected to settle towards the rear of the field.

Prophet’s Thumb steps back from the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap where he was only beaten 2.3 lengths and was far from disgraced in a rough house affair. With a six week freshen up in between runs, with a trial in between as well, the Rubiton Stakes winner from the summer looks well placed to bring up another win. Jamie Kah hops back onboard for the first time since their success in the Rubiton Stakes, and with a hot tempo expected from the likes of Ancestry and Alfa Oro, Prophet’s Thumb will get his chance to fly down the centre of the track and be too hard to hold out.

The much maligned Lyre returned in promising fashion at Morphettville in the Listed Manihi Classic on March 27. She has not tasted success since her win in the Blue Diamond Stakes over two years ago, but with the right run here in the Bel Esprit she is clearly one of the more classy runners in the field. From barrier two, and her get back and run on racing pattern she will need some luck at a crucial stage. If she is afforded the luck required, she will almost certainly be fighting out the finish at an each-way price.

The one at a big price who could cause a boilover is the John McArdle-trained Humma Humma, who had plenty of excuses when finishing behind Lyre in the Manihi Classic. Having only gone down by less than a length to Lyre, it was surprising to see that Humma Humma was almost double the price of her rival. Having won the listed Alinghi Stakes here at Caulfield two years ago over this track and distance, we know she can get the job done under these conditions. She is another runner who will appreciate the fast tempo, and looking for her to be making a well timed run late on in the piece.
