Ballarat betting preview

What Ballarat Races
Where Ballarat Turf Club – 240 Kennedys Rd, Miners Rest VIC 3352
When Sunday, May 14, 2023
First Race 12pm AEST

Racing heads to the Ballarat Turf Club on Sunday afternoon where a competitive eight-race program awaits. With a decent forecast expected for Ballarat, we should be racing on an improving surface throughout the day, despite the track coming up a Heavy 8 at the time of acceptances. Action from the ‘Rat gets underway at 12pm AEST.

Best Bet at Ballarat: Daiquiri

The Trent Busuttin & Natalie Young-trained Daiquiri was a nice winner on Australian debut on April 26 and looks set to go on with the job here as he steps up to the 2000m. The four-year-old gelding put the best part of three lengths on subsequent Sandown winner Royal Hard Hat on that day and did so when running away from his rivals over the mile. He looks a promising stayer and from barrier six under Jake Noonan draws to gain a perfect run in transit throughout. With plenty of speed influencers in the event, the race looks perfectly set up for Daiquiri to flash home down the heart of the track and keep an undefeated Australian record intact.

Best Bet

Race 5 – Silks#5 Daiquiri (6)

4yo Gelding | T: Trent Busuttin & Natalie Young | J: Jake Noonan (57kg)

Next Best at Ballarat: Wichitall

If there was a runner to blackbook from the Warrnambool Carnival, it was clearly the Symon Wilde-trained Wichitall who looks hard to beat on Sunday based on his debut effort. The three-year-old gelded son of All Too Hard got too far out of his ground upon settling and powered home to finish third. From barrier 10, if Brad Rawiller can have this bloke settled a pair or two closer to the speed, he is going to take some holding out. A few of these have had more than enough opportunities to break their maiden, but at start two, we’re hoping Wichitall can get the job done here.

Next Best

Race 2 – Silks#7 Wichitall (10)

3yo Gelding | T: Symon Wilde | J: Brad Rawiller (58kg)

$3.10 with Palmerbet

Best Value at Ballarat: Saltpeter

On his day, the John Moloney-trained Saltpeter is a handy galloper and can get the job done in the penultimate race of the day. The five-year-old gelding finished three lengths off our best bet Daiquiri when they clashed on April 26 and that type of effort should see him be quite competitive in BM70 grade here. Four of his five career wins have come on rain-affected going and despite just once placing from six starts at the 1600m, we simply cannot pass up the price on offer for this gelded son of Pierro. If Rawiller can land the one-one, Saltpeter looks a great play at Ballarat.

Best Value

Race 7 – Silks#3 Saltpeter (6)

5yo Gelding | T: John Moloney | J: Brad Rawiller (61kg)

$9.50 with Neds
