Ballarat betting preview

What Ballarat Races
Where Ballarat Turf Club – 240 Kennedys Rd, Miners Rest VIC 3352
When Sunday, February 26, 2023
First Race 1:15pm AEDT

Racing heads to the Ballarat Turf Club for the second time in seven days on Sunday afternoon, with an eight-race program set for decision. We should gain perfect conditions for racing on the weekend, and with the track coming up a Good 4 and the rail coming out 5m the entire circuit, every runner should get their chance when presented. We kick off the day of racing at Ballarat at 1:15pm AEDT.

Best Bet at Ballarat: British Columbia

Having won nicely at Sandown on February 4, the Grahame Begg-trained British Columbia looks a clear best bet of the day. The four-year-old gelding managed to lead throughout on that occasion when running time in an event where he was in hardly any danger. This looks to be somewhat of an easier assignment than what he has faced in recent times and despite drawing barrier 12, Jordan Childs should have no issue in finding the poll and dictating terms throughout. Childs has a formidable record aboard British Columbia (8: 3-2-1) and we see no reason why they cannot continue their strong results in the seventh at Ballarat.

Best Bet

Race 7 – Silk#4 British Columbia (12)

4yo Gelding | T: Grahame Begg | J: Jordan Childs (61.5kg)

Next Best at Ballarat: Deekay

Having shown plenty of progression during his three-start campaign during the spring, the Anthony Chibnall-trained Deekay looks one of the nicer plays of the day when he returns from a 14-week spell. The three-year-old gelding has a racing pattern which is hard to knock, considering he wants to find the rail, dictate throughout before ultimately offering a kick and try and break his rivals’ hearts. With the aid of two nice jumpouts in the lead up to this first assignment, we anticipate the son of Hellbent will be raring to go first-up and should prove hard to gun down in the second leg of the quaddie.

Next Best

Race 6 – Silk#4 Deekay (5)

3yo Gelding | T: Anthony Chibnall | J: Jack Hill (60.5kg)

$5 with Palmerbet

Best Value at Ballarat: Francine

We will be looking to bow out in style on Sunday when Aaron Purcell’s Francine steps out in the last hunting a third straight win. The five-year-old mare was a smart all the way winner in BM64 grade at Warrnambool on January 25 and with a freshen-up between runs, looks to present great value in BM58 grade. She needs to lug 62kg on her back following Tianni Champan’s 3kg claim but look for the young apprentice to use her claim to her advantage and have the Kuroshio mare bounding along out in front. She should gain a relatively uncontested lead throughout and with winning confidence behind her and somewhat a tactical advantage on most of her market rivals, we’re happy to dabble at the $15 on offer with online bookmakers.

Best Value

Race 8 – Silk#1 Francine (15)

5yo Mare | T: Aaron Purcell | J: Tianni Chapman (a3) (65kg)
