Bagot Handicap 2021 Horse Betting Preview
The first Group Listed race of 2021 in Victoria is the annual Bagot Handicap run over the 2800m at Flemington on New Year’s Day. Won by El Don in 2020, the Bagot Handicap has thrown up plenty of surprises over the years, but the punters have been known to snare the winner with the market elect as well. The race worth $160,000 has attracted a mixture of young and upcoming stayers, along with a mix of proven Listed grade winners as well.
The 2021 version of the Bagot Handicap is set to jump at 3:40pm AEDT.
Sin To Win (#3)
The last time Sin To Win raced at Flemington over the 2800m was on Melbourne Cup day, and didn’t he look impressive when bolting in under a hold? Now, we’ll be the first to admit that he meets tougher opposition here and is the only runner in the Bagot Handicap who has gotten the job done over 2800m. He was quite disappointing in his last start effort in the Sandown Cup, but off a six week freshen up he looks set to run a big race on Friday. He’ll be giving the leaders a fair start, but in a small field they shouldn’t be too far ahead of him, and he should be able to round them up in one foul swoop.
Tralee Rose (#5)
It is no knock on the Simon Wilde trained Tralee Rose, but the $7 on offer for Sin To Win was hard to ignore over the $3.30 on offer for Tralee Rose. This mare was impressive when finishing runner up in her last start over the 2530m at Flemington. Prior to that effort she had strung together a hat trick of wins to begin her four-year-old campaign, and looked impressive in all of them. From barrier two she maps to get a quiet run in transit and there is no doubt she will be there when the whips are cracking.
Steam Roller (#9)
Simon Ryan and Dean Yendall will be hoping Steam Roller can string together a hat trick of wins with a win in the Bagot Handicap following a dominant win at Moonee Valley a fortnight ago. His win over 3000m was utterly dominant when racing up on the speed and kicking clear in the home straight to win by three lengths eased down. He did that as big odds, and we’re hoping he can run a big race at odds again.
