Anamoe will be looking to add a third Group 1 to his resume when he starts as an odds-on favourite in Saturday’s Randwick Guineas (1600m).

The three-year-old colt has one of the best records for his age group, having won the Caulfield Guineas and being only narrowly beaten in the Cox Plate during the Melbourne Spring Carnival, but now back to Royal Randwick, trainer James Cummings is confident that he is going to be hard to beat.

With two runs under his belt this preparation at Rosehill Gardens, Cummings believes the son of Street Boss “is going to relish” returning to Randwick, where he is unbeaten in two starts.

“The Randwick Guineas has been a target race this preparation and arriving here, third-up in excellent form having won the city lead up, the Hobartville last start at Rosehill, he now switches to his preferred course at Randwick where he was so impressive in winning the ATC Sires’ Produce and that was off the back of two starts before winning the time-honoured Todman Stakes,” Cummings said in a weekly Godolphin update.

“In essence, not only is he in top form, but he is two from two at Randwick and he is going to relish getting back to that track.”

Anamoe was gritty when winning the Hobartville Stakes on February 19 at Rosehill, but due to James McDonald riding in Melbourne on that day, Tommy Berry did the steering on the star colt.

McDonald is set to reunite with the horse for the Group 1 feature this weekend, with the dynamic duo set to jump from barrier seven after the scratchings of both Ranch Hand and Forgot You.

On Saturday, Anamoe will face a heavy surface for the first time in what will be 14 career starts, but Cummings thinks he will get through the going given his impressive soft-track record.

“On the surface – I identified early on this campaign that he would seriously benefit from two lead up runs to be ready for the Randwick Guineas and I can see physically in the horse that those races have offered some benefit which is only going to help as we edge towards racing on a bottomless track,” the trainer said.

“The horses are going to need to be very fit to be running well on the weekend and whilst he has never seen a heavy track, he has excellent soft track form. This horse has the ability to let down powerfully on rain-affected tracks.”

Anamoe is the $1.70 favourite for the Randwick Guineas, while the Waterhouse & Bott-trained Converge has received some support early, firming from $6 into $5.50 at .
