Hugh Bowman has blamed two pre-race drinks for weighing in over 1kg after the Melbourne Cup.

Jockey Huge Bowman says a sip of water and half a cup of tea were instrumental in the jockey returning one kilogram overweight after the Melbourne Cup.

Bowman is appearing before the Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board on Tuesday to appeal a one-month suspension on three charges emanating from the Melbourne Cup a week ago.

Along with the overweight penalty of 21 meetings, Bowman is appealing an eight-meeting whip rule breach and a 12-meeting careless riding ban.
