The Everest barrier draw results & updated odds
WE’RE just days away from the world’s richest turf race and after all the furore and fanfare surrounding the barrier draw, the numbers have been officially released.
The team at Horse Betting has taken a look at each of the 12 runners gearing up for the second ever running of The Everest and assessed the chances of each competitor.
Barrier 1 – Redzel
The defending champion has drawn barrier one for this year’s Everest, which will suit the gelding’s on pace style. Redzel won last year’s race from barrier four and we’re expecting the Peter and Paul Snowden sprinter to surge to the front early and look to run them into the ground from the head of affairs.

Barrier 2 – Shoals
Three time Group 1 winner Shoals has made a habit of performing well in the big events. Typically the market is asleep to Shoals’ chances in the big races but we think the second line of betting is about right for a horse that has the ability to rapidly go past its rivals in the final 200m of any race.
Shoals is at $7.50 at all online bookmakers ahead of The Everest
Barrier 3 – US Navy Flag
The sole overseas invader in this year’s contest, US Navy Flag’s credentials cannot be doubted. The horse became the first horse in 35 years to win both the Middle Park Stakes and the Dewhurst Stakes in England, and the horse has looked great on the track after settling in Australia.

Barrier 4 – Brave Smash
Brave Smash draws the barrier that Redzel won The Everest from last year, and despite bringing in great form to this race we’re worried about the horse’s track record. Brave Smash is yet to miss a placing this preparation but has just two minor placings and no wins from four attempts at Randwick.

Barrier 5 – Osborne Bulls
Godolphin’s late call up Osborne Bulls jumps hugely in class here but the punters have come sharply for the gelding. The five-year-old is the market mover at Ladbrokes, but we’re thinking a race of this calibre may be beyond the horse at this stage of his career.

Barrier 6 – Trapeze Artist
Trapeze Artist opened as the hot favourite for this race but after a pair of lacklustre return runs the market has softened on the Gerald Ryan runner. We think the team earmarked this race a long way out however, and Trapeze Artist will be in cherry ripe condition for a peak performance.

Barrier 7 – Vega Magic
Vega Magic came second in this race last year and will look to go one better in 2018. After winning the Bletchingly in convincing fashion on July 28, Vega finished fourth in the Group 1 Memsie Stakes behind Humidor. The run in last year’s event will be hugely beneficial for the Victorian raider.

Barrier 8 – In Her Time
In Her Time comes into this year’s Everest second up, a point in the preparation which has yielded two wins and and three minor placings from six attempts. Despite the strong second up record we think the Kris Lees runner will be punching above its weight in this race and would need a miracle to salute.

Barrier 9 – Santa Ana Lane
A winner of three of its last four races including a last start win in the Group 2 Premiere Stakes over Everest competitor Shoals on September 29. The horse looks in perfect condition coming into this, but the wider gate could be a slight concern.

Barrier 10 – Graff
Graff started his career in spectacular fashion, winning three-straight races before back-to-back placed efforts in the Run To The Rose and the subsequent Group 1 Golden Rose. The three-year-old colt looks a promising type going forward, but this may be a leap too far at this stage.

Barrier 11 – Le Romain
Le Romain is the outsider of the field and barrier 11 has done no favours for the six-year-old. The horse was bad in the Tramway but bounced back sharply to finish second in the George Main Stakes. It would take a Herculean effort for Le Romain to win The Everest.

Barrier 12 – Viddora
Viddora is a superstar sprinter that has won Group 1 titles in Western and South Australia and recently added a Victorian jewel to her crown after winning the Moir Stakes. The wide barrier probably rules out the mare’s chances but if she can somehow get across cheaply it would be remiss of us to rule Viddora out.
