The Phar Lap Stakes is a Group 2 race for three-year-olds, run over 1500m at set weights by the Australian Turf Club at Rosehill.
Named after the legendary Phar Lap, the race was first held in 1973 and has traditionally served as a key lead-up to major autumn features like the Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m).
Initially run at varying weight scales, the current format of 56.5kg for colts and geldings and 54.5kg for fillies has been in place since 2005.
The Phar Lap Stakes has been held at Rosehill every year except for 2008, when it was run over 1550m at Canterbury.
The 2024 Phar Lap Stakes, worth $300,000, was won by Zardozi, defeating Makarena and Kintyre.
Notable past winners include Luskin Star, Apache Cat, Heart Of Dreams, Toydini, and several high-class fillies like Winx, Verry Elleegant, Funstar, and Hungry Heart, all trained by Chris Waller before going on to Group 1 success.

Recent runnings of the Phar Lap Stakes:
- Zardozi showed dramatic improvement second-up to secure victory in the Group 2 Phar Lap Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill. Tom Marquand headed straight to the rear of the field aboard the daughter of Kingman, allowing his filly to stride freely with cover throughout the journey, while the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained pair of Les Vampires ($3.40) and Raf Attack ($12.00) ensured a genuinely run affair. They ran along at a solid clip throughout, allowing Makarena ($4.00) to slot into the one-one throughout under Tim Clark, while the Chris Waller-trained Saltcoats disappointed despite an economical run in transit. The leading pair faded quickly when the whips were cracking, leaving the James Cummings-trained filly to swallow up her rivals along the inside to score a visually impressive victory.
- Punters kept continuing to launch into Zougotcha ($1.50) for the Group 2 Phar Lap Stakes and she justified the support with a dominant win over the 1500m. Trainer Chris Waller elected to take the easier option for connections, scratching from the Group 1 Coolmore Classic earlier in the week, seemingly paying dividends. James McDonald expertly crafted his way to the one-one position throughout the 1500m contest with Glint Of Silver taking things up throughout. Fireburn was cast wide throughout the race, pulling her head most of the trip and never settling into a spot after being ridden more positively. Meanwhile, Brosnan was tracking her the whole way home providing a nice turn-of-foot to run into third position. But it was all too easy for Zougotcha.
- In what was just a seven-horse field, Mr Mozart proved too good for his rivals, denying Chris Waller a sixth consecutive Phar Lap Stakes win. Ridden by William Pike, the three-year-old colt was sent out as a $10 chance with online bookmakers for the 1500m event. The son of Snitzel took his prizemoney to over $430,000 after the brilliant win in the Group 2 event. In recent years, Waller has won this race with Winx, Foxplay, Unforgotten, Verry Elleegant, Funstar and Hungry Heart, so Mr Mozart has joined an elite list of horses, but it was the Hawkes stable who reigned supreme in the Phar Lap Stakes.
