The Matron Stakes is a Group 3 race for fillies and mares, run over 1600m under set weights and penalties at Flemington by the Victoria Racing Club.
Introduced in 1994, the Matron Stakes was a Listed race until 2005 before gaining Group 3 status in 2006.
The 2024 Matron Stakes, worth $200,000, was won by Eternal Flame, defeating Running By and Foxy Cleopatra.

Recent runnings of the Matron Stakes:
- Eternal Flame ($4.20) finally received some luck as she claimed the 2024 Group 3 Matron Stakes. Damian Lane gave the four-year-old mare a prefect ride from barrier nine, getting her into a nice spot behind the speed before allowing the daughter of Sacred Falls to work through her gears in the final 300m. After Running By ($4.80) took over from the tiring leader, the Mick Kent-trained mare starting to lay in slightly but when Lane switched the whip into his left hand, she straightened and let down with a very strong finish to win the 1600m contest.
- Sirileo Miss led from start to finish in the 2023 Group 3 Matron Stakes, bringing up the five-year-old mare’s third Group 3 victory. Ben Melham pushed Sirileo Miss out of barrier one to take the lead inside of Barb Raider, and he was able to control the pace and allow his mare to settle into a rhythm with little to no pressure from the second horse. As the field rounded the home turn, this daughter of Pride Of Dubai was still going strong, and as soon as Melham pushed the button, the mare kicked clear to put up two or three lengths, and the race was over by the 200m mark, as nothing was making ground from the back to cause the leader any concern. Sirileo Miss was a $12 outsider with online bookmakers, with the race favourites, including Barb Raider, Excelida, and So You See, no match for the winner.
- Race-favourite Flying Mascot was too good for them in the 2022 Group 3 Matron Stakes (1600m) at Flemington. The win came after the daughter of Tavistock was able to take out the Group 3 Mannerism Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield in his previous outing. Jockey Blaike McDougall was able to give his mount a nice run in behind the leaders before peeling out coming around the home turn ensuring the mare was able to keep her momentum going. Flying Mascot hit the front early in the straight to go on to score by two lengths
