Ararat Cup Tip: Pittsburgh Pirate
Pittsburgh Pirate recorded back-to-back victories when the Henry Dwyer-trained gelding claimed the St Arnaud Cup last start. This son of Pierro settled outside the leader for most of the 2000m journey, took over at the top of the home straight, and even though the margin was slender, he always had the better of the runner-up in the concluding stages. If Neil Farley can push forward and settle on a moderate speed, Pittsburgh Pirate can bring up his winning hat-trick in the feature.

Best Bet at Ararat: Reel Hot
Following an encouraging second-place finish on debut at Warrnambool, Symon Wilde has found the perfect maiden for Reel Hot to open his account at Ararat. The three-year-old gelding settled midfield over 1400m and was left a little flatfooted at the top of the straight before picking himself up at the 300m mark to savage the line late. Stepping up to 1600m second-up looks like the ideal step for this son of Highland Reel, and if Teo Nugent can settle midfield off the rail from barrier eight, Reel Hot’s turn of foot will give him every chance to go one better here.

Race 7 – #8 Reel Hot (8)
3yo Gelding | T: Symon Wilde | J: Teo Nugent (58kg)
Next Best at Ararat: Earth God
Nothing went right for Earth God at Moonee Valley first-up when the Anthony & Sam Freedman-trained gelding jumped slowly and was made to settle three-wide at the back of the field over 1000m. Although Mark Zahra got moving out wide at the 400m mark, this son of Written Tycoon had no chance of making up any ground on the leading division. Now that he drops back in class to country grade and draws a better barrier, Harry Coffey will do everything to make sure Earth God jumps well and settles on speed before letting down with a strong finish.
