History of the Santa Margarita Invitational
First ran in 1935, the Santa Margarita Invitational was originally restricted to horses aged three or over, but after three years, they made it only open to fillies and mares.
Throughout the history of the race it has been ran over 7 furlongs, 6 furlongs, 8.5 furlongs and the current 9 furlongs.
The race was not held during the war years (1942-45) and was first run as an invitational in 1968.
