The Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes opens the quaddie on VRC Derby Day at Flemington on Saturday afternoon with a field of 17 three-year-olds scorching the track over the 1200m. Having been taken out by the likes of Home Affairs, September Run, Sunlight and Merchant Navy in the last recent times, good horses seem to win this race more often than not.

Online bookmakers have last-start Golden Rose Stakes runner-up In Secret as a $3.30 favourite, while Jacquinot ($6), Coolangatta ($7.50) and Buenos Noches ($9) are all given a chance.

It will be the charge of the Light Brigade early on with the likes of Best Of Bordeaux, Coolangatta, Grand Impact and Queen Of The Ball all looking to get the race over pretty quickly. Jacquinot, Lofty Strike and Sejardan will be giving their rivals a start, but look for them to be flashing home late.

Having only gone down by 1.5 lengths in The Everest following a sizzling win in the Golden Rose, it is hard to go past Jacquinot from the Mick Price & Michael Kent Jnr barn. The three-year-old colt looks a sprinter with above-average ability and, as we said earlier, good horses tend to win the Coolmore. He gave the likes of Nature Strip and Eduardo a massive start in The Everest but powered home to finish on the heels of the placegetters. He is set to be aided by a red-hot tempo in Saturday’s Group 1, and despite this being his first go down the Flemington straight, look for Damian Lane to stick to the grandstand rail and have Jacquinot flying home.

Coolangatta was scratched from the Manikato Stakes last Saturday, and having won the Moir Stakes at her last start against the older horses, she is set to appreciate stepping back to a battle against her own age group. She was second-up when winning the Group 1 last time out, and despite this being her first ever third-up run, she looks certain to fight out the finish. While Jamie Kah is up in Sydney this weekend, the Written Tycoon filly loses nothing with the in-form Craig Williams hopping on board for the first time. We expect ‘Willow’ will have this girl stalking the lead throughout before unleashing what is a very nice turn of foot. A win here would solidify Coolangatta as one of the best three-year-olds in the country.

Lofty Strike will appreciate getting back onto firmer ground this weekend and the Flemington straight should suit him perfectly. If Sejardan can repeat the finishing burst that saw him claim the Red Anchor Stakes, then he looks the best roughie in the race.
