After a modified Queensland Winter Carnival in 2020 due to COVID-19, we are back on track in 2021 and while the Group 2 Queensland Guineas has a new date at the start of the carnival, the quality of the field certainly hasn’t changed with an even spread of local and southern horses. Run over 1600m at Eagle Farm for $350,000, a field of 10 has been assembled in what will be a key lead up into both the Stradbroke Handicap and Queensland Derby for some of these runners. The speed should be genuine, given Apache Chase and Rollinwiththeflow will work hard early to cross form their wide barriers and Holyfield has drawn the rails to boot up and hold the fence. Expect to see Private Eye open favourite for this, with Apache Chase the best local hope.

We are with Private Eye in Saturday’s feature as he comes off a cracking second to Ellsberg in the Listed South Pacific Classic at Randwick during The Championships. The winner dictated terms in front on that occasion and ran them into the ground, while Private Eye got a long way back, over raced and was wide throughout and still managed to run home in what was the quickest final 400m of the day over 1400m. Up to the mile and in arguably an easier race, this Joseph Pride-trained three-year-old will be flashing down the centre of the big Eagle Farm straight. The son of Al Maher went on a winning streak of five straight over the Summer, with his win on January 2nd proving to be an incredibly strong form race. He is the class and Brenton Avdulla is here to ride him.

Apache Chase has been going very nicely in his recent outings, winning the Group 3 Vo Rogue Plate on January 2 over the 1400m at this track and then ran fourth in the Magic Millions 3YO Classic a fortnight later. He didn’t handle the heavy conditions first-up and then just got beaten by a couple better than him on April 3rd before bouncing back to trounce his rivals in an all-the-way display over 1400m in the Listed Daybreak Lover at Eagle Farm. He has yet to be beyond 1400m, so the mile is a query especially since he has drawn the outside alley and will want to be in the first pair, but all four of his wins have come at Eagle Farm and he is racing very well.

Chris Waller’s stable always has to be respected this time of year in Queensland, and while he saddles up both Bucharest and Kukeracha, we only want to be with the latter. Owned by astute racehorse owner and proud Queenslander, Neville Morgan, the son of Night of Thunder will be donning the same colours of Kolding who won the last edition of this race in 2019 for those omen punters. Kukeracha ran sixth behind Ellsberg in the same race that Private Eye comes out of, and while Private Eye was the better run in the race, Kukeracha looked a bit one paced at the top of the straight before working well through the line. He looks like he will appreciate the mile and has drawn perfectly in barrier three. Watch what he does late, he could be the Queensland Derby horse.
