The Group 2 Autumn Stakes for the three-year-olds sees a field of 10 colts and geldings compete for the $200,000. Fresh off a runner up performance in the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas, Amish Boy has opened a $4 favourite in an open market, which sees the VRC Derby favourite from 2020 in Young Werther on the fifth line of betting at $9. The 2020 Autumn Stakes winner was Microphone who saluted as a $2.60 favourite.
The 2021 Autumn Stakes is set to jump at 2:25pm AEDT.
Ciaron Maher and Dave Eustace trained colt Jet Propulsion comes to Melbourne for the first time in his career after showing plenty of promise in his debut campaign in Sydney. He is back from a four month spell after finishing within a length to the handy Peltzer in the Group 2 Stan Fox Stakes on October 10. His trial at Geelong on January 28 showed he is raring to go first up in the Autumn Stakes and the half brother to Pierata looks incredibly hard to beat. He looks to be the leader in the Autumn Stakes and on a day where it may be no disadvantage to be up on speed he could prove hard to catch.
It is hard to ignore Amish Boy’s last start second in the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas, he beat home the classy Away Game and despite being well held by Aim in the finish it was still a huge run from the back of the field. He was at least half a dozen lengths off the speed when turning in the Guineas and managed to only go down by just over a length. He has an elite turn of foot on the back of a genuine tempo and with Jet Propulsion set to make this a truly run 1400m event he will be the main danger late.
The pre-race VRC Derby favourite Young Werther resumes in the Autumn Stakes on the back of a three month spell. The 1400m may be a touch sharp for him but he will be warming up nicely over the last 100m, and if the leaders are tiring look for his endurance to be the difference in a race that could be set up for someone who can see out a genuinely run 1400m.
