It is Yarra Valley Cup Day on Sunday afternoon, and an eight-race card is set down for judgement at Yarra Glen Racecourse. With a bit of luck, HorseBetting’s Victorian form expert can find a couple of winners to help round out your weekend on a winning note. We should have perfect racing conditions with the track rated a Good 4 and the rail in the true position. Racing is set to commence at 1:20pm AEDT.

Yarra Valley Cup Top Tip – Look Closely

The Yarra Valley Cup worth $125,000 over 1950m is the featured event on Sunday afternoon and we expect the John Salanitri-trained Look Closely to get the job done at a nice price. He suffered from EIPH when finishing seventh at Caulfield behind Miss Five Hundred, but prior to that had recorded a smart win at Flemington and the star prior was beaten 0.3 lengths by subsequent Adelaide Cup winner Daqiansweet Junior. That form line in particular stands out in a field like this, and with main market fancies Pancho and Criminal Code dual accepted for Flemington on Saturday, the race looks set up for Look Closely. From barrier four, he is drawn to gain a gun run in transit and with Portland Jimmy set to make this a genuinely run affair, we expect Look Closely to prove too hard to hold out.

Yarra Valley Best Bet – Silly Salmon

Our best bet of the day comes up in the second leg of the quaddie when the Michael Huglin-trained Silly Salmon steps out over 1200m. The Fighting Sun gelding finished third in a tougher race than this at Moonee Valley on March 4 and needed to sustain a long sprint when chasing home the smart Elite Icon. Two starts back, he managed to beat subsequent Sandown winner British Columbia and with the form some of his rivals are in, he looks to have the right form coming into a race like this. Look for Brian Park to take a sit off what looks to be a hot tempo throughout the 1200m event and with a nice turn of foot, we expect Silly Salmon to finish the better in a race like this. The $2.70 from Ladbrokes looks the perfect price.

Best Value Bet at Yarra Valley – Stonefield

In what looks to be an open BM64 event, we are happy to be with the Leon & Troy Corstens-trained Stonefield at a double figure quote. The Deep Field gelding gets better as his preparation rolls on and considering he is yet to miss the top two from two runs when third-up, we think he can build on that record here. He was not beaten too far Bendigo on March 1 when making up decent ground over 1300m on a Heavy 10. He steps up to the 1500m on Sunday which looks to be perfect for him based on the way he hit the line last time out. In the small field of eight, look for Craig Newitt to have him settled at the rear of the field once more and with a nice turn of foot, he looks hard to hold out. We’re more than happy to take the $10 on offer from Sportsbet.
