What Canterbury Races
Where Canterbury Park Racecourse – King St, Canterbury NSW 2193
When Thursday, July 7, 2022
First Race 12:50pm AEST

New South Wales metropolitan races will be conducted at Canterbury on Thursday afternoon, and HorseBetting’s Sydney tipster is on hand to highlight the best bets and quaddie selections for the seven-race card. The track is currently a Heavy 10, and the rail is out 3m for the entire course. The first race of the day is scheduled to jump at 12:50pm AEST.

Note: This meeting was meant to be run at Warwick Farm on Wednesday, but has been transferred to Canterbury.

Canterbury Best Bet – Hell I Am

John O’Shea and Hugh Bowman combine with promising two-year-old Hell I Am, who resumes on Wednesday as a gelding. The son of Hellbent ran an eye-catching fifth on debut in the Wyong Magic Millions 2YO Classic, before starting favourite in the Aquis Gold Nugget on June 8 on the Gold Coast when fourth. He was a touch disappointing in his only start in late February when second, but we did see a couple of the fillies behind him go on to run very well in the Group 3 Magic Night Stakes. Hell I Am trialled really well at Randwick in late June, and he has raced well on a heavy track before, so we expect him to lose his maiden tag on Thursday.

Canterbury Next Best – Travest

Unfortunately, the transfer from Warwick Farm to Canterbury doesn’t really help Travest’s chances, but he is racing well enough to be competitive at a nice price. The Gregory Hickman-trained five-year-old ran fourth over 1400m at this Warwick Farm last start, but Brimstone came out of that race and won stylishly last Wednesday on the Kensington track at Randwick, franking the form. Now out to 1600m, the son of Tavistock should get all of the favours. Tyler Schiller is riding well of late, and his 2kg claim will be advantageous, while barrier 10 ensures the gelding stays out of trouble out the back. Travest does race well on rain-affected ground and gets in well at the weights, so he should go close.

Canterbury Best Value – Lisdoonvarna

Similarly to Travest, Lisdoonvarna loves racing at Warwick Farm, so the move to Canterbury is a slight query given it is her first time racing at the Sydney track. While the track is a concern, scratchings have decimated this field to just the six starters, so she isn’t going to have too many obstacles to get around. The Amanda Turner-trained galloper relished the Heavy 9 when winning back in April, defeating Camino Real and Vivid Flash over 1400m, before she failed to make ground on May 11 when the leader got away with cheap sectionals. Now eight weeks between runs, the daughter of Super Easy should be nice and fresh for this 1300m race on another heavy track. Drawn low in gate two, Kathy O’Hara will have the mare in a nice spot just off midfield, allowing her to get comfortable and sprint quickly at the end. This is the right sort of race for this horse, and the online bookies are giving us great each-way odds about her.
