What Doomben Races
Where Doomben Racecourse – 75 Hampden St, Ascot QLD 4007
When Wednesday, May 24, 2023
First Race 12:33pm AEST

The Brisbane Racing Club will host another very competitive eight-race program this Wednesday afternoon out of Doomben Racecourse. The track is currently rated a Soft 5; however, there is no rain on the forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday, so we expect to get to be racing on a Good track come raceday. The rail will be pushed out to the +6.5m position for the entire circuit after Doomben Cup Day was held at the track last Saturday, with the rail in the +2m position. The first race will kick off at 12:33pm AEST.

Best Bet at Doomben: Ring Of Steel

The Kelly Schweida-trained Ring Of Steel is coming off a nice win at Ipswich over 1100m on May 10, taking his career record to two wins from four starts. When returning to the racetrack for his second racing preparation, this three-year-old colt produced a dominant 6.5-length victory at Ipswich on April 5 to break his maiden. Schweida and his team then entered their son of I Am Invincible in the Listed Mick Dittman Plate and he finished last, beaten by nine lengths, two starts back. This time around, they have chosen to go from a Benchmark 65 win to a Benchmark 68, which will be much easier. James Orman has ridden this bloke at all four of his career starts, and if he can find a prominent position on speed from the awkward barrier (12 of 18), Ring Of Steel will go very close to recording back-to-back victories.

Next Best at Doomben: A Call From Heaven

The penultimate race of the day will feature last-start winner A Call From Heaven, who recorded her first victory of the campaign at Ipswich over 1680m on May 10. This four-year-old mare jumped as the favourite with online bookmakers and she didn’t let her backers down, getting out of the gates well and settling on-speed before getting the better of the leader in the final 100m of the race. On Wednesday, this girl will stay in Benchmark 65 grade and will only drop back 40m to a 1640m contest, but Cejay Graham’s 3kg claim will mean she has to carry only 1kg more than last start. With the rail in the +6m position, this daughter of Divine Prophet will benefit massively from drawing barrier one, as she should be able to find the lead quite comfortably. As long as Graham can get A Call From Heaven to jump quickly and hold the rail, we should see her give a good kick on the home bend and prove too hard to run down.

Next Best Again at Doomben: Bettcha The Crown

The last of three maiden plates on the Doomben card will see the Desleigh Forster-trained Bettcha The Crown return from 10-week spell for his third career start. The three-year-old gelding ended his first racing preparation with a third-place finish behind Speak Up at Eagle Farm over 1400m in a QTIS 3YO Handicap on March 11, a race that has seen two of the eight runners come out and win since. This son of Casino Prince will drop back to maiden grade for his first-up run this time in, and if James Orman can overcome the wide barrier (16 of 17), this guy should be going very close to breaking through for his first career win. Bettcha The Crown has shown in his two starts that he can run well both on-speed and from the rear of the field, so if Orman can find a position just worse than midfield off the rail, we should see him finishing off strong down the outside in the final 300m.
