Waterhouse & Bott claim first Gimcrack Stakes win

Regan Bayliss wins aboard Platinum Jubilee for Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott in the Gimcrack Stakes at Randwick.

An ecstatic Regan Bayliss said Platinum Jubilee displayed maturity beyond her years after guiding her to a smart win in the Gimcrack Stakes at Randwick.

The exciting filly stormed home from last to salute in the $200,000 Group 3 feature over 1000m, showing good nous to thread her way through the field from barrier eight.

“She’s gone around like she’s already had five or six starts. She got squeezed out of the barriers and she was back off them, but really travelled well through that ground,” Bayliss said.

“We weren’t going good enough at the top of the straight to come right to the outside, so we just weaved through them.

“And the more we got into the race she started to pick up and was dominant in the end.”

It was Gai Waterhouse’s first Gimcrack Stakes victory in her Hall of Fame career, alongside co-trainer Adrian Bott.

Stablemate Perfect Proposal was the $3.40 favourite with Ladbrokes and she finished second behind the $10 winning chance, while Sicilian also finished sixth in a great overall result for the stable.

“Fantastic to be able to do that with Gai. We brought a lovely group of fillies here today, we’ve got some fantastic owners behind us and supporters going to the sales,” Bott said.

“We bought some well-bred fillies that we thought would be nice, precocious types and they’ve been able to land it first-up. It’s an exciting time.”

Bott said all three fillies have exciting futures.

“It’s excellent to be able to get some nice value on their page, some residual value. We will get over today, have a look, analyse the race because there is a bit to look at, then go from there,” he said.

“We’ve got some nice horses behind us so hopefully we can have another really good year (with the two-year-olds).”
