Vale Her Majesty The Queen | Punt Drunk
On this Friday’s edition of Punt Drunk, we pay our respects to Her Majesty The Queen, who passed away overnight. Queen Elizabeth II was a lover of horse racing who raced horses all over the world. On a brighter note, a rare sight is set to take place at Flemington on Saturday with three full brothers all set to race one another. We also discuss the lacklustre debut of Black Caviar’s son at Moe on Tuesday.
VALE HER MAJESTY
Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II passed away overnight at age 96, which sent the world into mourning. While she will be remembered for a lifetime of good deeds, we in the racing world will remember her for her love of the horse. Her purple, red and black silks were worn by some good horses all over the world, and her attendance at Royal Ascot was always a pleasing sight, especially when she cheered home one of her own.
One of Australia’s most famous racehorses, Black Caviar, got some of the Royal treatment when she won at Royal Ascot in 2012 in the Group 1 Diamond Jubilee. Australian jockeys James McDonald and Tommy Berry also got to wear the famous colours on a couple of occasions, with the pair taking to social media to pay their respects.

A FAMILY AFFAIR
For the breeding buffs out there, this one is for you. We don’t recall many full siblings racing each other. Sure, there have been some horses go toe-to-toe out of the same dam, but a full relation is rare.
On Saturday, three horses all by Galileo and out of Remember When will line up in the sixth race at the Flemington. Serpentine (6YO), Team Captain (7YO) and King Of The Castle (5YO) will all be vying for a Melbourne Cup spot.

NOT AS GOOD AS MUM
It must be tough living in your mother’s shadow, but for Peter Moody’s three-year-old I Am Caviar, that’s what he has to deal with. Regally bred by I Am Invincible out of champion sprinter Black Caviar, the colt was sent out as a $1.10 favourite with online bookmakers in his racing debut at Moe on Tuesday. You know how this ends.
After getting a good enough run outside the leader, I Am Caviar could only manage to hang on for fifth. Punters who took the short quote either have too much coin or were completely sucked in by the hype. He isn’t Black Caviar – he’s just another son of a gun, after all. The wonder mare is yet to produce a good foal, so when will we punters learn? The bookies got the lot.
