Twelve 3-year-old colts and geldings will contest the $200,000 Group 2 Tulloch Stakes on Saturday, in a bid to replicate the last four winners of this race who went on to win the ATC Derby seven days later. The market has it as a race in five, between Cherry Tortoni, Favreau, The Frontman, Young Werther and Yaletown, who all sit between $4 and $6. Run over 2000m, we can expect to see Yaletown cross over and lead, while Bob and Rondino are also likely to be handy from the wide gates.

Young Werther has been improving with each run and he now gets his chance to return to the winner’s circle. While the margin was six lengths in his most recent runner-up performance in the Alastair Clarke at The Valley, he did make up a lot of ground late on a deteriorating, leader’s track, so there was some merit there. Staying at 2000m will be a great benefit for this son of Tavistock who will be rock hard fit fourth up. He ran third in just in his third career start in the Group 1 VRC Derby, so he clearly has staying ability, and he has beaten home Cherry Tortoni both times they’ve squared off. At $5 with betting sites we are happy to play.

New Zealand Derby place getter The Frontman is having his first Australian start on Saturday, and while he will be better suited at the Derby trip, he could replicate the likes of stablemate Jon Snow who ran third in the NZ Derby before winning both the Tulloch Stakes and ATC Derby. From barrier one under jockey Hugh Bowman, he should get a lovely run in transit just off the pace which will set it up nicely for this Makfi colt in the straight. He has had a tune-up trial in preparation for this, so he should be acclimatised to our conditions, and he is in the hands of one of the greatest training partnerships in the world. The clear danger.

John Sargent will saddle up one of the favourites in Favreau from the outside alley. The son of Tavistock was dominant over the mile at Kembla Grange on March 12, winning by two and a half lengths in quick time (1:35.02). While there isn’t going to be as much speed in this as there was last time out, he will likely be able to settle closer thanks to a cart across by likely leader, Yaletown. James McDonald has been booked to ride which is a purposeful booking by Sargent, and this gelding has the pedigree to outstay some of his rivals. A win won’t shock us.
