This Saturday, Trentham is definitely playing second fiddle to the great day of New Zealand racing at Pukekohe. The weather has been unsettled, and as of Friday the track was down as being slow with the likelihood of overnight rain, but nonetheless there are eight competitive races to make up the day’s card.
Best Bet at Trentham – Brando
The open handicap over a mile is where we find the best best of the day in Brando. He has found his best again with back-to-back wins, most recently winning at Otaki in a five-horse field over 1200m. There has been a query on him over the mile in the past but those efforts were in much richer company, and as a proven weight carrier he will have no problem lumping the 59kg on Saturday. Apprentice hoop Ciel Butler has been in winning form recently, and as long as he settles in the run, he should complete the hat-trick – regardless of the track conditions.

Next Best at Trentham – Vishakha
Vishakha is not really a horse you’d like to have your last dollar on, as she has a few tricks – especially around the barriers. The key to an improved performance on Saturday could be the step up to a mile, where she has placed three times from five starts. She has been costing herself by making slow starts and then having to make up too much ground thereafter. They will not go as quickly over the longer journey and she should be able to settle a lot closer in the running. If the breaks come her way, then she is capable of having the last say.

Best Value at Trentham – Zena Rocks
The maiden over 2200m is where we find the value bet of the day in Zena Rocks. She was fairly well supported when resuming over the mile at Otaki just over a fortnight ago and would have taken a lot of improvement out of that effort. The step up in distance looks ideal and the wide open spaces of Trentham will suit her down to the ground. She has shown that she can handle wet tracks in her trials, and she should go close to winning in this at good each-way odds in an open field.
