The Tramway Stakes is a Group 2 race held at Randwick Racecourse in early September, with the race boasting a prize pool of $300,000.
The Tramway Stakes is run over 1400m under Set Weights and Penalty conditions for open class horses that are three-years-old and older.
From 1886 to 1978 the Tramway Stakes was run as a handicap race, before it was upgraded to Listed grade from 1979 to 1983. However, after 1983 the race gained Group 3 classification until 2013, before getting one final upgrade to Group 2 level from 2014 onwards.
As the race is run over 1400m, the Tramway Stakes fields are normally made up of stayers kicking off their spring preparations and middle distance three and four-year-olds who are seeking black-type at the end of a winter campaign.
The last four editions of the Tramway Stakes has provided the first two back-to-back winners (Zaaki 2021/2022 and Dreamforce 2019/2020) since Grenoble completed the feat in 1959 and 1960.
Notable winners of the Tramway Stakes include Zaaki (2021/2022), Dreamforce (2019/2020), Happy Clapper (2017), Shaftesbury Avenue (1990), Imposing (1979) and Wenona Girl (1961).

Recent Tramway Stakes results
- Royal Patronage ($18.00) has caused a minor upset on Australian debut to claim victory in the Group 2 Tramway Stakes (1400m) at Randwick. The Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained import was first-up after a 420-day spell and two barrier trials, and fitness didn’t seem to be an issue for the son of Wootton Bassett, bounding clear with the prize after receiving an economical run under Tim Clark from barrier 10. He was able to slot into the one-one position throughout proceedings and didn’t look to be in any danger turning for home, hitting the front with only Amelia’s Jewel ($3.60) making significant inroads in the final 300m. Kovalica ($12.00) and Freedom Rally ($3.80) were left to fight out the minor placings on a day it was difficult to make ground from the back; however, it was all honours the winner as the five-year-old import stamped himself as one to follow throughout the spring.
- Pericles, the four-year-old from Godolphin, bolstered his Group 1 Epsom Handicap aspirations with a commanding front-running victory in the $300,000 Group 2 Tramway Stakes (1400m) at Randwick. Trained by James Cummings and presented second-up following a recent Rosehill triumph, Pericles demonstrated readiness for the prestigious Randwick mile. Taking the lead from the 1000m mark, the Street Boss gelding ran unchallenged throughout, delivering a standout performance considered one of his career best. Under the guidance of apprentice Zac Lloyd, Pericles crossed the finish line nearly a length ahead of Skyman in second, with Hope In Your Heart closing late for third. Despite being the $2.60 favorite, Olentia could not improve from fourth-fifth position and finished fifth without gaining ground on the leaders.
- Zaaki ($1.90) once again proved he is one of the best thoroughbreds in Australia, leading all of the way to win the Group 2 Tramway Stakes at Royal Randwick for the second consecutive year. The Annabel Neasham-trained eight-year-old was resuming after his shock Doomben Cup loss in May, but after two positive trials, the short-priced favourite was ready to fire first-up over 1400m. In the heavy conditions, Zaaki led throughout and put the race to bed by the 200m mark of the home straight, with only Icebath ($4.40) making an impression from the back to finish second.
- Cox Plate favourite Zaaki resumed in Saturday’s Group 2 Tramway Stakes at Royal Randwick in ultra-impressive fashion, winning by over a length to extend his winning streak to four. Zaaki was sent around in the Tramway Stakes as an easing $2.30 favourite on Saturday and won by 1.5 lengths over the fast-finishing Aramayo ($41) and Star of The Seas ($11). Having picked up right where he left off in Queensland, Annabel Neasham’s star runner now looks set to head to Melbourne in preparation for some lofty spring goals.
- John Thomspon and Nash Rawiller combined with Dreamforce ($3.30) to record back-to-back victories in the Tramway Stakes at Randwick. After working in the run early, the son of Fastnet Rock managed to find the top and lead at the 1000m mark from Greysful Glamour ($12) and Kolding ($8.50). However, as the field rounded the home turn, nothing could make an impression on the winner and he held on for a very tough win.
- Giving his jockey Nash Rawiller his fourth winner on the program, Dreamforce ($3.30) claimed the Tramway Stakes in fine style. Once Rawiller took the son of Fastnet Rock to the front and controlled the race to his liking, he gave none of his rivals a chance. Of the placegetters, Te Akau Shark ($3.80) ran home strong into second place, with Eckstein ($6) battling on for third after sitting just off the speed.
