Townsville best bets & form for Tuesday, January 16
THE Queensland meeting of Tuesday is at Townsville as the popular venue hosts a seven race meet.
There are a number of runners we fancy here to generate some cash as the work week gets underway so let’s take a look at what we’re dealing with.

Race 1 – Handicap (1000m)

Flinders Hiway is the only horse in the field that has won previously and we think that will hold it in good stead. The horse won in commanding fashion as a short-priced favourite on December 28 and we expect it to jump as a similar price.

Race 2 – Maiden Handicap (1300m)

How Leighway is still a maiden is a mystery to us but we do not expect that to be the case after Tuesday. In its last eight races the horse has placed six times including a narrow defeat last-start on January 4. The horse should battle close to the speed and be hard to hold out.

Race 3 – Handicap (1400m)

Green Anchor draws well in a smaller field and is the horse to beat here. The horse won at a huge price two starts ago and backed that up on January 4 with a gallant second. Green Anchor concedes weight to the field but looks the best prospect.

Race 4 – Benchmark 55 (1400m)

Mainshaft get a good claim from the jockey here and when that’s coupled alongside great form it makes for a compelling case. Two of the last three races the horse has ran in have been wins including a last-start win at this very track. Mainshaft is one of our favoured bets of the day.

Race 5 – Maiden Handicap (1000m)

Fields Avenue is expected to spear out from the horror draw and take some cashing. In its two career starts the horse has yet miss a placing, which counts for a lot in this field. We believe the horse will win if it gets a cheap lead.

Race 6 – Benchmark 60 (1000m)

Bella Sash smashed the field in its last race and while this is slightly tougher company, that form cannot be discounted. It gets the slightly tricky draw here but it looks a class above a number of these runners.

Race 7 – Class 3 Plate (1200m)

Magic Belinda is an in-form galloper that has plenty of form to draw upon. Last time out it won by just shy of six lengths at this track on January 4 and from barrier three it will be the horse to beat.
