What Toowoomba Cup Day 2023
Where Clifford Park Racecourse – Hursley Rd, Newtown QLD 4350
When Saturday, September 23, 2023
First Race 1:08pm AEST

Feature racing heads to Clifford Park Racecourse on Saturday afternoon, as The Toowoomba Turf Club are set to host their annual Toowoomba Cup (2000m) meeting. Nine races are set for decision, with the Listed Weetwood Quality (1200m) paired beautifully to allure a stacked 14-horse field stacking their claim to the $160,000 prize packet on offer.

The rail is set in the true position throughout the circuit, and with pristine conditions forecast leading into Saturday, it should be pristine Good 4 surface for what’s set to be a terrific day of racing. The opening event is set to get underway at 1:08pm AEST.

Toowoomba Cup Top Tip: Baanone

Baanone represents terrific each-way value with online bookmakers in the Toowoomba Cup and we think the nine-year-old can cause a major upset on Saturday. He’s been up for a long time this campaign, but the son of Shocking continues to excel despite his ageing legs. He’s been held back over the 1600m in his latest two appearances at Doomben, drawing horrible barriers nine and 10, proving too difficult to overcome. He gets to a favourable journey (2000m) for the first time, and with barrier three all but guaranteeing a soft run throughout, look for Angela Jones to bully into the clear aboard Baanone late.

Weetwood Handicap Top Tip: Yellow Brick

We’ll be looking for a race-to-race double for the Tony & Maddysen Sears barn as Yellow Brick makes his return after a 105-day spell. The ever-consistent four-year-old hasn’t missed the frame in 10-career starts, with six wins and four more minor placings to his name. He’s unlucky not have more wins on the resume, with most considering him a good thing beaten at his latest start on June 10 at Eagle Farm in the Group 3 Gunsynd Classic (1600m), and even that form has been franked with Rediener winning in Sydney last Saturday. Yellow Brick is the clear class in this field, and provided James Orman can keep the gelding out of trouble, he should be saluting.

Best Bet at Toowoomba: Wanda Rox

Wanda Rox is seeking six wins on the trot on Saturday, all of which have come at this course. It’s an incredible record the daughter of Wandjina holds when racing at Toowoomba and the Lindsay Hatch yard have placed her beautifully to continue her winning streak. This is undoubtedly her toughest task to date, taking on genuine metropolitan company, and the 1200m does hold some minor concerns. In saying that, If Wanda Rox handles the 1200m, she’s the one to beat in our eyes.

Best Value at Toowoomba: Release The Beans

Release The Beans is coming into this Class 6 contest in good form for Robert Heathcote and doesn’t look far away from his second win of the campaign. He found the minor money in his last two start, storming home, but just missing out on the major prize. He’s drawn awkwardly (14) this time and we’re hopeful Boris Thornton takes the initiative to head forward and find a spot better than mid-field. There’s a chance he gets caught wide at some stage; however, we think it’s worth the risk with Release The Beans showing he’s classy enough to win regardless of where he lands.
