The more showers, the better for Buffalo River at Caulfield today

Michael Moroney believes if Buffalo River starts well, his $12 hope will be a good chance at winning today’s Lawrence Stakes at Caulfield.

The more showers across Melbourne today, the better.

That is the opinion of Michael Moroney, who will oversee his $12 winning chance with Bet365 – Buffalo River – in the $300,000 Lawrence Stakes (1400m) in the Group 2 feature at Caulfield.

The track is currently rated a Good 4, but Moroney believes if it softens from the showers expected, then that will only benefit the cause of his seven-year-old.

“If we get some rain it should give us a good chance, I would think,” he told horsebetting.com.au.

The gelding has not saluted since his triumph in the Group 3 Moonga Stakes over the same distance also at Caulfield on October 16 last year.

And his recent Queensland campaign saw him finish sixth in the Glasshouse Handicap on the Sunshine Coast, and second-last in the Stradbroke Handicap and sixth in BRC Sprint both at Eagle Farm.

But Moroney has been impressed with his sprinter’s work leading up to today’s feature.

“He had a nice jumpout up the straight and he did very well,” he said.

The 46-time Group 1 winner hopes Buffalo River – to start from barrier two with Daniel Stackhouse aboard – can get off to a good start.

If he does that, Moroney believes he will give himself every possible chance of winning his first race in seven starts.

“He’ll probably lead. He’s a good leader,” he said.

“As long as he hops away. He hasn’t been hopping away as much his past few starts.

“So I’m hoping he gets away nicely.

“But he hopped away well in his jumpout, so we expect him to do the same.

“He just hasn’t had things go his way (since his last victory).”
