The Tancred Stakes is one of the feature staying races of the Sydney Autumn carnival and it runs for a stake of $1.5 million.
The 2400m feature is held at Rosehill in late March and the weight-for-age contest has been won by some of Australia’s best stayers.
It is a true staying race and that shows in the past winners list. Names such as Eremein, Makybe Diva, Ethereal and Might And Power have won the Tancred Stakes in recent times, but the history goes back to when Bonecrusher won in 1986 and Kingston Town won in 1980.
That makes it one of the must-win races for budding stayers and we have race history, updated odds and recent running’s of the great race available for punters looking to secure some value.
The Tancred Stakes has been synonymous with mixing favourites and long-shot winners over its long history, so finding that early value is key for punters and signing up to one of our bookmakers is the best way to find it.
The Tancred Stakes has had several name changes over the years with it being known as The BMW or Mercedes Classic over the last 30 years, but in 2018 returned to having the name of The Tancred Stakes in honour of the former Sydney Turf Club chairman Henry Tancred.

Recent Tancred Stakes Results
- Kalapour ($34.00) caused a major upset in the Group 1 Tancred Stakes (2400m) at Rosehill, giving Dylan Gibbons his second career Group 1 victory as a jockey. The Kris Lees-trained seven-year-old was considered one of the outside chances leading into Saturday, with the son of War Command unwanted in the market as a $34.00 chance with online betting sites prior to the jump. He was third-up into the campaign on Saturday and was always going to benefit from a step up in trip after finishing runner-up in the Group 3 Sky High Stakes (2000m) behind Lindermann on March 16. Dylan Gibbons got the ideal position throughout the journey, slotting in midfield as the eight runners ran along in a single file in the early stages. Post Impressionist ($2.50) and Buckaroo ($4.60) were dragged back towards the rear of the field and ridden with confidence, however, both were unable to muster when asked to sprint with 500m to travel. More Felons ($6.00) was picking up for James McDonald, and at one stage appeared to be hitting the line best, as Kalapour kicked back to secure his first Group 1 victory.
- Rachel King and Bjorn Baker have repeated the dose on Arapaho after combining in the Listed Canberra Cup, they’ve found success in the Group 1 Tancred Stakes at Rosehill. It was a race of tactics as Knights Order took up his regular role of leading throughout the 2400m contest and never settled as the likes of Sir Lucan and eventually King Frankel gave him plenty to think about. The mid-race move by Tyler Schiller aboard King Frankel was arguably the one that gave the eventual winner the perfect cart into the race. He took off with 800m to go and exposed his mount on the five and six-wide line turning for home, allowing Arapaho and Rachel King to truck into the race out wider. Montefilia was as honest as ever running into second coming from off the pace, while the same can be said for Gold Trip who got too far out of his ground and Cleveland cutting back to the inside looking cherry ripe for the Group 1 Sydney Cup in two weeks-time. Arapaho was too good on the day though and the Lope De Vega gelding doesn’t look out of place moving further into the autumn.
- Having smashed a similar field in the Australian Cup at Flemington a fortnight earlier, the Ed Cummings-trained Duais put in a similar gap job to claim the Tancred Stakes. The mare was sent around as a $2.50 chance to claim consecutive Group 1’s, but realistically she should have been sent around as a $1.50 chance considering the style she won in. Having settled at the rear of the field on the back of a genuine tempo, Joshua Parr had the mare building through the gears approaching the 300m mark where she hit the lead and put three-lengths on her rivals in quick succession. The win was her third win at the highest level, with plenty more to come.
- After missing the placings for the All Star Mile and Ranvet Stakes, punters were still backing the six-year-old horse to get the job done in which they were right to do so. Sitting mid field until the 400m where jockey Glen Boss asked for a little more and that is what Sir Dragonet did, making a break on the outside and proving to the world he still has it by winning by 2.3 lengths and proving to be a real contender against Addeybb and Verry Elleegant in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes two weeks later.
- Group 1 victories do not come any more impressive than Verry Elleegant’s win in the Tancred Stakes. Having made the home turn five lengths off the lead, Verry Ellegant under James McDonald was quick to put her rivals away in a couple of strides going on to win by 4 lengths in the 2020 Tancred Stakes. Having been sent around as a $2.15 favourite Verry Ellegant handed jockey James McDonald successive victories in the race after riding Avilius to victory in 2019.
- Avilius has long been the heir apparent to the throne Winx is about to vacate as Australia’s best racehorse and the champ did himself no disservice with a dominant Tancred win. The Godolphin runner settled towards the back of the field before being unleashed just before the turn. Avilius hit the front untouched at the 300m mark and streaked away to win in fashion.
- The 2016 Melbourne Cup winner Almandin had only won once in six attempts since claiming the race that stops a nation but the Lloyd Williams-owned runner wound back the clock in this one. The favourite raced just off the pace and presented at the optimal time to record his second Group 1 title.
- Pre-race favourite Jameka ($3.10) put a six and a half length margin between her and Australian Cup conquerer Humidor ($3.70), with Expspheric ($8) further back in third. Champion jockey Hugh Bowman was in the saddle for popular Victorian trainer Ciaron Maher. With Lasquety Spirit making the pace, Bowman expertly guided Jameka to a winning position at the turn, before bounding away for an easy victory in the popular feature. Read full report.
- Preferment was at the height of its powers in 2016 and the Chris Waller-trained horse proved too strong. The four-year-old lived up to its breeding by Zabeel by scoring a narrow victory. It settled midfield for jockey Hugh Bowman before taking off before the turn and holding off Who Shot Thebarman. Punters backed it into $4.50 – the same line as Montaigne which would later be sold to Hong Kong.
