What Swan Hill Cup Day
Where Swan Hill Jockey Club – 17 Gray St, Swan Hill, VIC, 3585
When Sunday, June 12, 2022
First Race 11:40am AEST

It is Swan Hill Cup Day on Sunday afternoon as the Swan Hill Racing Carnival comes to an end for another year. A nine-race program is scheduled as the long weekend continues and Horsebetting’s Victorian form expert James Herbert is confident he can build on bank we (hopefully) made at Sandown on Saturday. With the Sandown track set to be an improving Soft 6 and the rail in the true position throughout, every runner should get their chance if good enough. The first of nine is set to jump at 11:40am AEST, with the Cup set to go at 3:50pm. Here are our free tips for Swan Hill Cup Day:

Swan Hill Cup Top Tip – Silent Sovereign

With $175,000 on the line in the Swan Hill Cup, a capacity field of 14 has accepted for the feature event of the day and we anticipate Silent Sovereign can bring up a second win in three starts. The five-year-old mare from the Tony & Calvin McEvoy yard was a dominant winner in the Group 2 Queen Of The South Stakes two starts back, before finishing fourth in a Stakes event over 2015m. She drops back to the mile, the same trip she won at two starts back and this is no doubt easier than what she has been racing in during the Adelaide Carnival. From barrier 10, look for jockey Blaike McDougall to have her settled midfield with cover from the tricky draw and as long as she does not get trapped wide throughout, the Dalakhani mare looks the one to beat. The $11 with Unibet is a ridiculous price for a Group 2 winner two runs back.

Best Bet at Swan Hill – Komachi

The Mark Pregus-trained Komachi was the definition of a good thing beaten in his Australian debut when going down by just over a half-length in finishing third. The four-year-old gelding was slow away after being fractious in the barriers and was then held up for a run at a crucial point when building through the gears. As long as he has improved out of the barriers inbetween runs, then the Kingman gelding looks to have a bit of class in this BM64 field and is sure to have derived benefit from that first-up run. Despite the soft draw of barrier three, we expect Jake Noonan to have Komachi settled towards the rear of the field and if the brown gelding can replicate the same turn of foot he produced last time out, he simply looks too good for this lot.

Best Value at Swan Hill – Paper Dragon

The Henry Dwyer-trained Paper Dragon had been racing in consistent form before a below par performance at Sandown last time out, but we anticipate she will bounce back impressively on Sunday. Prior to that effort in town, he had strung together consecutive victories, including a dominant win at Moonee Valley at a similar price he goes around at in this. The three-year-old filly has shown throughout her career that she is tactically versatile, but having drawn the widest barrier of 14, we expect Mitch Aitken will take her to the rear of the field. With plenty of early speed engaged, the race will be perfectly set up for a backmarker like Paper Dragon to build through the gears and finish the better. The $19 with online betting sites is simply too hard to pass up.
