The Standish Handicap is a Group 3 event held at Flemington Racecourse.
Traditionally held on New Year’s Day, the Standish Handicap was moved to the middle of January in 2022.
The Standish Handicap is named after former Victorian Racing Club Chairman Frederik Standish.
First run in 1884, the Standish Handicap has been run at Group 3 level since 1980.
When Iglesia won the race in 2001, he did so in a track record time of 1:07.16, a mark that still stands to this day.

- In the wake of his triumphant victory in the Standish Handicap (1200m) at Flemington, Sghirripa has posed an interesting question for his connections. Jockey Craig Newitt, who expertly guided the South Australian sprinter to his first Group win, suggested a straightforward solution to the impending decision regarding Group 1 autumn features such as the Oakleigh Plate or Newmarket Handicap. “We don’t they run in both?” Newitt proposed confidently, emphasising the horse’s prowess in the race. “I actually thought mid-race because I was that confident that far out, I’d give him a test over the 1200 metres. “He’s obviously a really good short-course horse, but I exposed him early and the last 300 metres, he was dead-set floating around and waiting for the competition. “I don’t think I got anywhere near the bottom of him. We’ll take it one step at a time, but he’s pretty exciting.”
- The 2023 edition of the Standish Handicap saw Snapper Power make every post a winner, with an outstanding front-running ride from hoop Jye McNeil. On his first Saturday back after a stint in Hong Kong racing, McNeil was able to return in style. There were plenty of admirers for the well-backed Snapper ($5), who was able to jump cleanly from barrier eight, before leading towards the near-side running rail of the Flemington straight. Snapper managed to hold off the fast-finishing Rose Quartz ($4), who just ran out of time chasing down the leader, who had got some cheap sectionals earlier in the race.
- Following a decent spell and a different training routines, Halvorsen ($7.50) returned to winning ways in the 2022 Standish Handicap. Having won the race in 2020, Jamie Kah piloted the Robbie Girffiths & Matthew de Kock-trained veteran to feature success. Despite giving race favourite It’sourtime ($3.40) a 2kg advantage, Halvorsen managed to build through his gears perfectly to blouse the favourite in the shadows of the winning post, with The Astrologist ($5) back in third. The win handed Jamie Kah her second straight win in the Standish Handicap, having steered Sirius Suspect to victory 12 months prior.
- Having placed in three of his last four starts at Stakes level, the Saab Hasan-trained Sirius Suspect broke his duck when leading throughout in the 2021 Standish Handicap. Ridden perfectly by Jamie Kah, the Flemington specialist managed to hold out his rivals when it mattered most, and in doing so handed trainer Saab Hasan his first stakes winner since Shoreham won the Group 3 Easter Cup in 2018.
- Queensland-based Andrew Mallyon returned to Flemington to ride Halvorsen in the 2020 Standish Handicap, and the flight was well worth it, as the Robbie Griffiths-trained sprinter continues his strong affiliation with the Flemington straight. Having won his previous two starts at the track, Halvorsen made no mistake in the Standish, when getting the better of $3 race favourite Bold Star.
