Quaddie

CAULFIELD might be hosting both the Thousand Guineas and the Caulfield Guineas, but there’s still some of the best three-year-olds on show at Randwick on Saturday.

The Group 1 $500,000 Spring Champion Stakes is for the youngsters looking for the longer distances and it features in this week’s Saturday quaddie which kicks off at 3.35pm with the October Handicap.

The third leg features some feisty mares in the Group 3 Angst Stakes and punters will be hoping to secure the quaddie cash in the final leg where an even field will line up.

Leg 1 – October Handicap (1400m)

Handfast is a talented gelding for John O’Shea which wasn’t far behind Sons of John last start. The four-year-old was good enough to beat Santa Ana Lane earlier in the year and its subsequent runs have come in behind some nice types. Carries a light weight of 54.5kg and it has been supported into $3.50.

Burning Passion has won two of its last three starts and it looked most impressive last start. The son of Northern Meteor scored by 1.3 lengths over the highly-touted Torgersen which should be good form for this. It gets another run down in the weights and given its record on this track, it must be included here at $4.60.

Religify has been primed with two trials leading into this and it has plenty of speed on its day. The Chris Waller-trained sprinter is classy at best and it has never finished out of the money in five starts at this distance. Drawing barrier two is ideal so include it for value at $5.50.

Leg 1 tips: 4, 6, 8

Leg 2 – Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (1400m)

Prized Icon has struggled since winning the Champagne Stakes in April, but it was desperately unlucky last start when being promoted to third position. The James Cummings-trained colt should have won the Gloaming Stakes last start, but punters might get their money back this time around. Drifting in the market at $3.80, but it’s a must-include here.

Yankee Rose is the current $2.60 favourite and rightfully so. It’s a group one-winning filly which ran good sectionals behind Global Glamour last start and the increase in distance is what connections have been aiming towards all campaign. Drops in weight for this and it will be many punters anchor in the quaddie.

High Mist is worth including at double figure odds as punters should overlook its most recent start where the saddle slipped. Form prior was strong.

Leg 2 tips: 1, 4, 11

Leg 3 – Angst Stakes (1600m)

Lady Le Fay finished off strongly last start and the form behind Sons of John should stack up well. Trained by Chris Waller, the six-year-old is a capable mare which has won six from 21 starts and three have come at this distance. It ran fourth behind Azkadellia in the Queen of the Turf and a similar run sees it winning here easily. Equal favourite at $3.70.

Dixie Blossoms wasn’t disgraced in behind Tycoon Tara last start in the Golden Pendant and that form will be strong for this. The Ron Quinton-trained mare hasn’t won for some time which is the main concern for punters, but it hasn’t had the best of luck and it should be winning this spring.

Extensible did the job well last start by putting up 1.5 lengths on the previously unbeaten Bullrush. Its start prior was a second placing behind Antonio Giuseppe which has since finished second in the Group 1 Metropolitan and it looks a runner for the future. Another priced at $3.70.

Leg 3 tips: 4, 7, 8

Leg 4 – Sensis Dash Rating 85 (1200m)

Denpurr ran way over the odds when winning last start at Randwick, but it’s much shorter for this. The Snowden-trained mare is $6 for this and although it has no form second up, it goes well on this track. It rises up in grade after winning in rating 78 grade, but it raced at much higher levels last preparation so that won’t worry it. Each way chance.

Suspense ran well for third last start and it won its only second up start. Also from the Snowden stables, Suspense is twice a winner at this distance and despite drawing awkwardly in barrier 11, it should figure in the finish at $6.50 to win.

Forget the run of Brigadoon Rise last start behind Denpurr as it had no luck in the straight. Giving Peter and Paul Snowden their third runner in this field, the four-year-old has been well backed at $5 to beat the stablemates and down in the weights at 54kg, it looks a good chance of doing so. Include in the final leg of the quaddie.

Leg 4 tips: 3, 5, 6
