Recent Show County Quality winners
- Joliestar may have punched her ticket into The Everest after she demolished her rivals in the Group 3 Show County Quality first-up. The Chris Waller-trained mare was well-backed in the lead-up to her fresh run, following two impressive trials, which saw her jump as the $2.50 favourite with online bookmakers. The daughter of Zoustar was given a top ride by James McDonald, as she settled midfield off the fence and was kept out of trouble before the final turn. McDonald allowed his mount to balance up at the 400m mark, but once he released the brakes and asked for a burst of acceleration, Joliestar sprinted away from her rivals. Even though she was eased up with over 50m to go, Joliestar still claimed a 2.9-length victory over Our Kobison ($4.00) and Phearson ($51.00), who filled the placings, but they were no match for the talented sprinter.
- After giving his rivals weight first-up, Buenos Noches ($5.50) gave his rivals wind burn as he glided on by to claim victory in the Group 3 Show County Quality at Randwick. The son of Supido entered the Show County Quality as the clear class horse in the race, after running well in both Group 1’s at Flemington, the Newmarket Handicap and Lightning Stakes during the autumn as a three-year-old colt. Dylan Gibbons settled Buenos Noches back in the field and let him go through his gears before finding clear air to chase down the leading duo of Argentia ($7) and Dragonstone ($6.50). Although he wanted to lay in and do a little bit wrong, the Matthew Smith-trained galloper straightened with 100m to go and booted clear to record a dominant victory.
- Brilliant Perth sprinter Showmanship showed all of his class when saluting in the 2022 Group 3 Show County Quality. Despite giving away a decent head start on the field, Showmanship, under a masterful ride from James McDonald, produced a stunning final 200m to gun down Prime Candidate. Despite being five-lengths off the eventual runner-up, Showmanship went to another level as he would go on to register an eighth win from just 10 starts. He flew home in the final 600m including a sensational split between the 400m and 200m when he broke 11 seconds as he stormed into the race.
- Coming off a profitable Queensland Carnival campaign, Joe Pride’s Private Eye announced himself as a genuine spring contender with a commanding win in the Group 3 Show County Quality. An unwanted betting proposition, Private Eye bought up a seventh win from 10 starts when unleashing his customary turn of foot. Jay Ford picked up the ride as a late replacement for Brenton Avdulla, and was blown away by Private Eye’s acceleration as he ran home in 32.75 seconds for his last 600m. With such a strong finish Embracer, a vulnerable leader was always in trouble late over 1200m, with Icebath finishing a length back in third.
- The James Cummings-trained Roheryn had always been touted as a sprinter with plenty of ability, but it took him until his five-year-old season to reach a career peak with victory in the Group 3 Show County Quality. Despite coming up against genuine Group 1 stars in Probabeel and Funstar, Roheryn had race fitness on his side, compared to the two mares resuming first-up from a spell. That fitness advantage showed late on with Jason Collett getting every last ounce of energy out of Roheryn to hold off the fast-finishing Probabeel and Special Reward in a ding-dong battle where less than a length separated the first four across the line.
- Despite the judge taking several minutes to rule his eye over the photo finish, Godolophin’s Deprive rewarded favourite punters by the barest possible margin. In one of the tightest finishes in the history of the Group 3 Show County Quality, Deprive overcame a sluggish start to hug the rails under Rachel King to get the better of Trope in dramatic scenes. The win handed Deprive his fifth straight win, having picked up where he left off in the autumn with this first-up win.
